The Book of Kicelia

History:

Kicelia Aranna , a Gnome of great reknown not only for her prayer which said to instill hope in the hopeless and entreat Mazzu directly, but for her trials which were many. A common teaching to young Gnomes, the trials of Kicelia is required reading for all Shimmering Hand recruits. Kicelia was said to be of legendary beauty and grace, and was to be married off to a human warlord to enstill peace.   However, she was kidnapped on her wedding night which sent both Human and Gnomish kingdoms into was with the Orcs and Bugbears of Orc Vein Trench and Bugbear Reach respectively. Such a war set the entire southern hemisphere of Espen on edge. The conflict undoubtedly would have been bloody and lasted years.   The Gnomes wanting only her safe return insisted on paying the ransom, and the humans whose military prowess would be in question for doing so insisted on a military response, even if it threatened the life of Kicelia. After years of incisiveness on both sides a decision was arrived at, battle plans were formed and on the day the campaign was to start a battle-hardened Kicelia arrived at camp covered in blood.   Her exploits of heroism and self-rescue are an inspiration for the Gnomish people.

Excerpt: Prayer of Kicelia

Oh, Almighty Mazzu, I beseech Thee to grant me strength For I have battled through the depths of Rashim (an afterlife devoid of water), for my sanity   Confronted the very manifestation of Beshlash (demon), simply to know his name But now my love for Thee burns brighter than the bluest flame Every day, I kneel at the river and pray   Yearning for the holy waters to cleanse me of this unbearable pain For only Thou can rid me of the torment I've endured And in return, I pledge my eternal devotion to Thee, oh Mazzu.

Relevance:

To this day, ransom is not paid for Gnomish citizens or residents in Gnomish patron villages. This has spilled over to Gnomish trade as well, with cargo and crew alike forfeited. This has led to the saying that 'its like negotiating with a Gnome' (referring to an non-worthwhile endeavor).
