Botanist Findings
Only able to be discovered at night time, the Iter Mushroom sprouts, blooms, and dies between dusk and dawn. Upon its death and dehydration in the morning sun, spores are sent out and the process begins over again the following day wherever the spores land. Many botanists are baffled by the mushroom's resilience and ability to survive in any environment with the only changes being the number of spores that yield mushrooms being dictated by the surrounding moisture of the area. Thus far, despite numerous attempts, botanists have been unable to splice of crossbreed the species of mushroom with anything else.
Horticultural Findings
Also known as the "migratory mushroom" and "the walking mushroom" for its highly erratic growth patterns domestication has been a challenge. The only semi-successful attempt came in the town of
Drydock at an abandoned warehouse. At the time it was the largest space available, a team of Goblins were hired to create a consistent artificial breeze to allow for the spreading of pores. That combined with a retractable roof that allowed sunlight into the space and could be closed after the spores had spread the entire operation costs researchers 600 GP a day. Due to the high costs, the project was abandoned and the samples were locked in the warehouse until it was sold. However, when it was sold and opened the spores of 500 Iter Mushrooms were sent into the wind causing the largest traveling troop of mushrooms in Espen to be released. That troop is still in migratory patterns in sync with the winds. Every year on Shenzen 81, the troop returns to
Drydock and blooms in the area for 3 days.
Herbalism
The mushroom has 2 usable parts though harvesting each comes with its own difficulties. The caps are highly toxic and can cause disorientation in creatures without a tolerance to them. The stalks which are tough and gamey are not toxic but require 2 weeks of drying in order to be edible. Once dried they can be ground into a powder and added as a spice bringing an earthiness to the dish.
