The Under-Institute Warren
The sewers underneath the The Knutterden Institute of Chemical and Alchemical Indagation are strangely clean, something that most attribute to the effect of many different caustic and volatile chemicals being dumped into them by The Institute, but the reality is somewhat more mundane. The Under-Institute Warren connects directly to the sewers and the Ratfolk who live there are fully aware of the dangers of allowing alchemical waste to build up near their home, so they keep the sewers nearly spotless. Because they all learn how to identify and neutralize a wide variety of al chemical ingredients and reagents, the warren produces a great many alchemists and students for The Institute
Hidden underneath their feet
Founded only shortly after The Institute itself, The Warren connects directly to the sewers underneath The Institute in multiple locations and spans most of the footprint of the campus. The natural inclination of ratfolk to keep the location of their warrens secret means that few Knutterdonians are aware of its existance, although many members of The Institute have wondered where the many ratfolk students who pass through the halls of the prestigious school come from.
Alchemy
Being located underneath one of the most prestigious schools of alchemy in The Shattered Continent means that no ratfolk pup goes long without learning how to identify and clean up or neutralize a wide variety of alchemical ingredients and reagents. Ratfolk, contrary to the assumptions of many, tend to be fastidiously clean and tidy, but for the members of The Under-Institute Warren keeping their sections of the sewers clean is a matter of safety. A tremendous variety of dangerous and volatile chemicals are dumped into the sewers by the institute on a daily basis and the members of the warren have become experts in dealing with them.
Because of their circumstances, many of the warren members end up becoming students at The Institute at some point in their lives and many find jobs there afterwards. There is some confusion among the faculty as to the sheer number of ratfolk who attend the school and this has lead to the belief among many that ratfolk are simply naturally predisposed to alchemy.
