Eastern Shield Island

The north-eastern side of Shield Island is by far the most easily accessible, and is the only portion of the island which has been colonized by humans. As the last major landmass of The Shattered Continent to be colonized, it's mostly undeveloped, with a handful of small settlements all within travelling distance of Waylon's Landing and some Lizardfolk settlements in the saltmarshes along the north-eastern shore.

History

This region has never been a heavily developed one, as even before the cataclysm it was one of the most distant points of the continent

Before The Cataclysm

It's position on the very edge of the serpentfolk's empire meant that this region's development seems to have been minimal, with only a single medium sized settlement having been discovered.

After The Cataclysm

Shield Island was the last of the major landmasses to be discovered, with famed Alhammish explorer Leif Redsson making landfall on the northmost point of the island at the end of his famed "outside run" along the northern edge of The Shattered Sea in 1633. It would be another hundred and fifty years before The Channel was fully navigated and the first human settlement was built in this region, and nearly another fifty before the first major city, Waylon's Landing, was founded.

Geography and Climate

The furthest east areas of Eastern Shield Island are a tropical paradise, sharing the balmy climate of the Shattered Sea. Salt marshes stretch across most of the north-eastern shore, hot and inhabited by several tribes of lizardfolk who migrated from the other side of the Shield Mountains. Around forty miles inland from the north-eastern shore is a line of forested hills with a somewhat more temperate climate than the coast. On the western side of the hills, a vast savanna stretches all the way to the Shield Mountains.

Settlements

There are a number of small settlements in this region, all fiercely independant and inhabited by hardy people, used to the rigors of living on the undeveloped frontier, but the largest and most important by an order of magnitude is Waylon's Landing.

Waylon's Landing

Main Article: Waylon's Landing
The Settlement of Waylon's Landing is the point at which most people arrive at the island, and where any products produced on the island make their way back to more developed lands. It's a proper walled city with an extensive port and warehouse district where goods are collected from both this region and many of the nearer islands in the Shattered Sea before being shipped back to the rest of the continent. There are a number of small farmsteads and communities within a days travel of Waylon's Landing which are usually considered to be part of the city.

Minor Settlements

Most of the settlements in this region are built within a few days travel from Waylon's Landing, as it's where all traffic from the rest of the Shattered Continent arrives on the island, and the only source for outside trade.

Mournstead

Main Article: Mournstead

Mournstead is small town built in the grasslands past the southern tip of the hilly region which runs the length of eastern shield island and to the south-west of Waylon's Landing. It has a relatively small population and relies on business from both the motley collection of prospectors who occupy the hills to it's north and the various ranchers and farmers in the grasslands to the west. The town has a bar and brothel known as "The Saloon", a hotel, dry goods and provisions store, and a well stocked arms and armor vendor. The town sheriff is the only real law enforcement in the area, although he rarely leaves the town.

Merton

Merton is a small hamlet to the west of Waylon's Landing, built between the edge of the hills and the salt marshes, and near a medium sized river which flows from the hills down into the sea. It is a mixed farming and fishing community, with many of the locals venturing out into the marsh in flat bottomed boats to catch catfish, giant frogs, and cast nets for other fish and crustaceans. The nominal community leader, or at least the person they send to talk to outsiders, is a half-elf ranger of Fruchtbarlandian extraction named Albin Horn
