Thule Geographic Location in Eschaton Cycle | World Anvil

Thule

Thule is an island sometimes said to lie beyond the bounds of Midgard. Though sometimes considered part of the North Realms in the sense it lies in the far north, the island is mythical to North Realmers and few have ever seen it.

History

The island was once the site of the ancient dverg city of Nordri, which was long abandoned for unknown reasons.

Inspiration

Thule is the name for Iceland. In Classical (see Pytheas of Massalia) and Medieval European lore, Thule was a far-northern realm, possibly an island. The word might have referred to Iceland (as is the case here), or to another land, assuming it wasn’t a work of fancy entirely. The salient point here is that Thule represented something just beyond the known world, a place of mystery.
