Kvenland

Kvenland is located in the far north of Midgard. The land is divided into in the icy and treacherous north, Pohjola, and the slightly more hospitable south, Kalevala.   Ten tribes live in Kalevala. A chief governs each tribe, though four kings each claim final authority over one more of these tribes as well. Infighting between these tribes has prevented Kvenland from achieving any kind of unity. This, in turn, has led the Kvenlanders to become relatively unprepared for raids and invasions from both Sviarland and Bjarmaland.   Despite the threat of raids, the Kvenlanders do manage frequent trade with their neighbors from all around. They are famed masters of the northern waters, and two kingdoms there have sizable fleets of ships.   Pohjola is a realm ruled by the witch-queens, famed for their beauty and terrible magic. Other North Realmers, even the dvergar of Nidavellir, tread here with reluctancy. However, men from Kalevala sometimes venture north in hopes of gaining a wife from these famed people. Most never return.

Inspiration

The name comes from an old name for Finland, possibly incorporating parts of northern Sweden. Its found in several original sources. In the case of The Ragnarok Era, the name refers to that whole peninsula, including part of Russia.
