Housecarls

Housecarls are the veteran warriors of Ordayn and Jorland, considered their "elite" soldiers. A noble will retain a complement of housecarls in his household, providing them with lodgings, equipment and board, and they in return will protect the noble and fight for them when required. It is considered something of a status symbol to have a large number of housecarls in your service, with the wealthiest earls often hosting upwards of a thousand. 
Equipment
A housecarl will often train in the use of many different weapons, but traditionally the most popular armament is the greataxe. Similarly, although there is no standard uniform, nobles will often pay over the nose to ensure their personal bodyguards are equipped with the very best, including full plate, usually trimmed with fur or leather to stave off the cold.
