Wry
God of Wisdom, Prophecy and Magic
The god of wisdom, prophecy and magic watches over the people of the world, and teaches his worshippers how to guide events to a better outcome. Depicted by his followers as a great black raven, Wry is seen as a teacher and seer, willing to give advice to any who wishes to seek the truth. Often seen in art as keeping a fatherly eye on his fellow god, Puck the Trickster, Wry applies the same patient lessons to his disciples that he does to his peers.
The Temples of the raven god of wisdom are often mistaken for libraries or observatories, as they share those purposes and functions with that of a place of worship. Within, the devoted of Wry puzzle out signs of the past, present, and future. These places of wisdom are eager to share knowledge with potential students, as long as they prove their intent to use such knowledge wisely. All temples of Wry boast extensive stores of books, scrolls, and tablets that would be the envy of many magical scholars across the continent.
Of all the temples of Wry, the most famous is the Academy of Enmarken, which is nestled in the high mountains on the border of Alfheimr and the Magocracy of Valsan. This ancient college of magical lore accepts aspirants from across the continent. Boasting dozens of classrooms, a dormitory that houses thousands, and a vault of magical artifacts, the Acadamy of Enmarken is one of the top schools of the arcane outside the Valsan capital, and the two often participate in friendly competitions for bragging rights.
The devoted of the god Wry are thoughtful and far-seeing, often acting as teachers, guides, and councillors to politicians or rulers. As the god of magic and wisdom, Wry’s followers excel in fields that require such talents. The common priests of Wry seen on a daily basis are known as “Raven Clerics”, and are what most people think of when imagining the wise teacher priests in Wry’s service. They are found in service of academies, or as advisors both to politicians and generals. The order militant of Wry’s church are the formidable “Eldritch Centurions”, dedicated warrior mages who specialize in defensive and precognitive magic, able to predict threats before they manifest. The leader’s of the faith are the enigmatic “Raven Magus”. Found in deep libraries or atop lonely astronomy towers, these powerful sorcerer priests watch in unflinching vigilance for signs of coming calamities, using their powers of foresight to prepare the world to endure the challenges ahead. Careful never to cross the dangerous line into altering fate, they seek only to mitigate the effect of such dangerous threats as forest fires, earthquakes, and even all out war.
Tenets:
Gather knowledge for the betterment of others, however vile knowledge is an insult to Wry, and should remain out of reach.
Learn from the past, to see what lies ahead, and prepare for its coming.
Magic is an art form, beautiful to behold, do not pervert it against the natural order.
Seek out and nurture potential in others, they may go on to teach you something in turn.
Example sins of Wry include but are not limited too:
Using magic to raise the dead.
Stifling the potential of a dedicated student.
Attempting to alter the flow of destiny, instead of preparing for it.
