Kingdom of Pheia

Pheia lies deep below the ocean, deep beneath the waves off the southern coast. Pheia was once a beautiful island nation, until a cataclysm some time ago sank it beneath the ocean. Resting below the waves within a magic bubble, this protection serves to filter air in and out whilst keeping the crushing ocean from rushing in.   Centuries ago, A mysterious magical cataclysm surged over the island Kingdom of Pheia, bringing with it tidal waves and buckling the bedrock beneath it. The Kingdom of Pheia sunk below the sea, forcing the greatest abjurers in the nation to band together and form barrier to repel the rushing waters. Soon after, with more time and magic, they were able to expand the city in domes, each with its own abjurer keeping the barrier in place. This is a taxing thing, and sometimes abjurers do not last long in maintaining bubbles, yet despite the burnout rate being high, it is considered an honor in Pheia society to literally keep the waves at bay.   The rulers of Pheia are the monarchs King Presus and Queen Udelpha. They keep the kingdom-city protected, and beautiful in aspect. In turn, Pheia attracts a multitude of tourists who consider it a vacation spot, despite the danger posed by its current predicament. Reaching the bottom requires use of complex transportation systems using seabound vessels reinforced with Pheian shielding magic, but are paid handsomly for the privelage.   Besides this, the people of Pheia are proud, yet aloof to the rest of the world around them. They consider travelling outside Pheia to be a diversion from their greater responsibilities beneath the waves. Not all people from Pheia share their xenophobia. Those chosen to become Myrmidons are trained from youth. Exposed to growing amounts of pressure from the deep sea floor, these soldiers are the backbone of the small but mighty Pheian military.   Many races make their home in Pheia, though it is somewhat rare to see Mogatai so deep under the waves. While there is no one religion that is commonly practiced in Pheia, most citizens adore the god Pith who saved them from destruction long, long ago. According to legend Pith asked the people not to worship him and not to take anything from themselves to offer to him, even if it was surplus. Therefore, the people of Pheia worship Pith solely by word of mouth.   In the early weeks of the Spring of 1024, the underwater domes of Pheia were swarmed by titanic sea creatures. According to reports from survivors, mutated sea predators and unknown tentacled horrors began pouring from a local trench like a tide, and slammed into Pheia’s defenses, choking its ports with battle. Defenders reported seeing a fae-like creature with the lower body of a shark, darting about behind the front lines. She could be heard goading on the sea creatures and pointing out targets with a wicked spear. Before long, the rulers of Pheia were forced to abandon the outer ring, which contained much of their transportation and communication infrastructure with the outside world. The Pheian Abjurerers retracted the dome to the second ring, which threatened to leave the central dome entirely cut off.   Reports indicate it was after the outer dome fell that the dragon Valezia, the Serpent of Coral, appeared in the waters outside Pheia, and managed to push back several of the larger monstrosities that threatened the dome. The defenders rallied to Valezia’s call, and managed to hold the tide back at the barrier gate to the central dome. In the following days with the line held, the monsters pulled back to hunt easier prey along the coast. Some beasts remain, and Valezia has been in contact with the King and Queen of Pheia to escort transport ships into and out of the city to get much needed news and supplies from the outside world. They call any remaining Selkies home to defend Pheia, and have requested aid from the nearby naval nations.   9/1024 - The people of Pheia survive on a knife’s edge. With the central dome of the capitol cut off from its satellite domes, supplies like food and medicine have been depleted at a startling rate over the summer. The shark-fae, known as “She-who-drowns” by the Pheians, has pulled back to harass any relief forces and outer satellite domes that she can. The Dragon Valezia has been reinforced by returning Selkie, fae loyal to the Deepwode, who have managed to bring some small semblance of stability to Pheia by slaying the deep sea horrors where they can. The infrastructure of Pheia has been crippled, and only through the desperate actions of their mages maintaining the dome, and relief sailors from the Sultanate of Sahir, Il-Paraonde, and the White Cloud Republic, are there enough routes for shipments to travel into Pheia to get food and supplies to its suffering people. The King and Queen of Pheia are often seen amongst their people, offering the aid of their own personal kitchens to help feed the masses and assure their people. Rumor from within the royal palace is that they have some plan to strike back at the monsters led by She-who-drowns, but no efforts are currently focussed on stabilizing the central dome.
