Varralkat

The Varralkat is a species of large feline that reside in the central regions of Ourobos within the borders of Astrindon, Kuhlaine and Ethaesca . While difficult to do, the species is actually capable of being tamed and partly domesticated, which is a task the royal lineage of Astrindon is known for accomplishing, where the family line breeds Varralkats to provide to heirs as a sign of their heritage. The animals are among the largest cats on Erlyse, but do not carry as imposing of a frame as other species since the Varralkat are designed for more stealthy tactics than overpowering prey or an adversary. They have elongated builds and heads, making them somewhat resemble large versions of a mongoose, with large noses capable of tracking vulnerable prey over long distances. Their olfactory senses are capable of identifying weaknesses in other animals such as illness, internal injuries, or disabilities, simply from the scents the prey produces via pheromones or other bodily functions. This makes the species incredibly opportunistic, and in regards to the companions used by the Desreumaux family of Astrindon, can help them determine the toughness of an opponent on the battlefield. The species has exhibited a rather impressive degree of intelligence as well, as they can be taught to recognize different types of human tools such as various weapon types and will change their tactics in combat when facing different weapons or people clad in different types of armor. This also assists them in infiltration of a residence or fortification of sapient races, or in the case of Numaras Desreumaux in the past, a member of the royal family who was a bit of a tyrant to his inherited Varralkat companion in life, escape of their predicament. In Numaras' circumstances, the cruelty of the prince was rewarded in his throat being torn out in his sleep, and the Varralkat he had abused was never found. It has become a tradition for the family to treat their companions with respect ever since.
