Yosei Cullinary Traditions

Unlike most of Zacan, the inhabitants of Sokoku, especially the Yosei elves do not eat with knives and forks, instead they use two straight sticks to pinch their food to get grip on the item.

History

The Yosei believed that stabbing into meat after it was cooked was disrespectful, so to counter this a method of eating that pinches food rather than stabs into it was developed. While the view that stabbing cooked food being disrespectful has mostly faded away over the years, especially as new meals were created, the method of eating has remained the same and spread to all sentient races in Sokoku and even to some other regions of Zacan.

Execution

The sticks are both held in the user's dominant hand. The bottom stick rests on top in the soft flesh between their thumb and index finger, the lower part rests on the ring finger of the same hand. The top stick rests in the same area as the bottom stick, but closer to the index finger. The lower part rests further down the index finger. This creates a natural wedge shape between the sticks. The index finger manipulates the top stick to open and close the wedge shape. This can be used to pinch food to grab the wanted item rather than stab into it.

Components and tools

Two straight sticks, usually made out of bamboo or wood, but sometimes metal or bone tools are made.

Participants

This practiced by all those who are eating at the meal, this practice extends to most races in Sokoku.

Observance

This is used at most meals, however there are some that are some meals that can be consumed using only a spoon and some using your bare hands. The sticks are only really used in stead of a traditional knife and fork seen in other parts of Zacan.
