Wayfinder branch Item in Erilar | World Anvil

Wayfinder branch

Rimmon trees don't have particularly strong wood. The trees are tall and thin like an aspen, but with more branches with a light beige coloured bark. They not terribly useful when it comes to their wood, and produce no edible fruits or seeds. However the trees are still very important to travelers, but for a completely different reason. Rimmon trees are slightly magical and have an innate sense of direction. When a branch or stick falls from the tree, it will always fall and try to point from north to south, unless other forces interact with the stick on the way down. This makes the sticks rather useful for travelers as they can be used to find your way.   These sticks are known as "Wayfinder sticks" by travelers and are so useful that even more nature based creatures such as dryads and fauns use them while in their forests to help orientate themselves. This is especially useful in denser forests where the trees' canopy can block the sun and stars for alternate navigation methods.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The branch of the Rimmon trees, when fallen off the plant naturally have a curious property. When the a stick from the branch is dropped, it will always fall down pointing north to south, unless acted upon by an outside force. This makes the plan a favourite among rangers, hikers and explorers who can use the branches as an improvised compass.

Manufacturing process

If you are making a point in the stick, all you need to do is whittle down the thinnest end of the stick into a point.
