Abbey of St. Artin the Martyr Building / Landmark in Eriand | World Anvil

Abbey of St. Artin the Martyr

An abbey built around the springs where St. Artin the Martyr  was slain. The waters are said to have healing properties and the abbey has two guesthouses to serve those who come seeking aid.

Purpose / Function

It is a pilgrimage site for the ailing, especially those with gastrointestinal troubles.  People believe that bathing in the springs at the abbey will heal them of their sickness, and have even been known to drink the water as a cure for stomach illness, though the monks and nuns caution against this practice.

Alterations

Constructed as a small shrine to house the relics of St. Artin at the site of his martyrdom, the abbey has undergone repeated expansion through the years as pilgrimage and patronage have increased both the wealth and obligations of the abbey. The most recent expansion was the construction of a second guesthouse, which is used to quarantine particularly ill pilgrims away from the rest.

Architecture

The abbey is an architectural hodge-podge due to its age and repeated expansions and renovations; the core of the abbey is a small basilica in the Late-Parsenian style, while its most recent additions are in contemporary and even cutting-edge fashions.

History

The abbey is said to have been constructed directly atop the foundations of the cottage where the maleficar who slew St. Artin dwelt, after her crimes had been discovered by the witness of the miraculous spring which flowed forth where the blessed martyr's viscera touched the ground. It was constructed two centuries after his martyrdom, when the saint's cult began to grow in popularity following an outbreak of an unknown illness. (St. Artin being the patron of gastrointestinal illness.) Initially small, the abbey has grown in size over the years as pilgrims from across Eriand travel there after hearing testimony about the efficacy of its waters against a wide array of ailments.
