Hiyot

Hiyot are sapient hyena people. They live in packs and are known for their intelligence and cunning. Hiyot have thick hides with coarse fur.   Hiyot culture values humor, strength, and community. Their society is organized into packs led by a strong female called the Prime. The Prime leads her pack against other packs or individuals who threaten them. Hiyot are very territorial, especially when it comes to food sources. They will attack anyone they consider a threat to their territory. Outside of defense and offense strategies, the hiyot have a great deal of personal freedom.   Hiyot have a reputation of being excellent hunters and trackers among other species. They use their keen senses of smell and hearing to hunt prey, as well as their sharp teeth to tear apart larger animals. Hiyot also like to build dens underground. While not all hiyot prefer to do so, many choose to live in these dens during the cold winter months. In addition, gnolls enjoy making tools out of bones. These tools include weapons such as spears, clubs, and knives.   Hiyot are often seen as cruel, sneaky, and brutal to outsiders. The truth is more nuanced than that. To hiyot, honor is no different from reckless abandon. When hunting or fighting, hiyot are aggressive and unapologetic about taking down any creature that stands in their way. Hiyot fight dirty, using their claws and fangs alongside their weapons to cut opponents down as efficiently as possible. Any loss of a pack member affects not just the individual, but also their pack. A hiyot's pack is something they take very seriously—and if you cross them, you'll be lucky if they don't kill you.   Wasting time on anything but victory, whether it's by mercy or by cruelty, is seen as foolish and immoral. Hiyot see brutal effectiveness as a cardinal virtue and prefer to use ambush and hit-and-run tactics whenever possible. If they're forced to kill an enemy, they make sure to do it quickly and efficiently. This hasn't done much to improve their relationships with the other species.   Hiyot worship their ancestors. They believe the spirits of those who were killed in battle remain here to protect their descendants. Hiyot revere the ancestors of their own kind above all others, but they also respect the ancestors of other races. For this reason, hiyot are willing to work together with other species, even if they aren't always friendly toward one another. They will extend this honor to particularly difficult foes as a token of admiration and appreciation for a good fight.
