Moons

It is difficult to truly feel alone in the lands of Erebos when the three moons are full, each staring unblinking upon you like the eyes of deep-sea fish as they hover, hungry and unmoving in the darkness.

  • Gambler (red) has a 30.5 day cycle.
  • Shield (white) has a 45.5-day cycle.
  • Yolk (yellow) has a 21-day cycle.

The movements of the heavens repeat themselves not only annually, but in greater patterns. Following the the moon Yolk, Corbel counts the years in cycles of three, a new cycle beginning when Yolk is new on the Spring Equinox.

Each cycle is associated with one of the gods or with the Norns. Running through all six cycles three times marks a 54-year era. Eighteen such eras makes a 972-year age. This form of timekeeping dates back to the earliest days of Corbellus.

Since the Extinguishing

Since the Extinguishing, the moons have begun to wander from their paths. The Old Corbellian Calendar is still in use, but astronomers constantly watch the skies and adjust when the months begin and end in order to match what happens in the heavens. Whether there is a pattern to their movements or whether they are truly random, no one knows, but if there is a pattern, it has not repeated in twelve years.

Weather has become unpredictable since the death of Yggdrasil. Snowstorms may sweep across the earth in the middle of summer, or the heart of winter may dawn bright and warm. Roll 1d10 on the following table at the beginning of each month to find out what weather will occur.

The Thirteenth Month

One unexpected side effect of the moons’ movements is that, occasionally, the thirteenth new moon occurs weeks before the end of the year. In such years, astronomers declare a thirteenth month. It has no name, and no god or court is associated with this month. In this power vacuum, the power of the Od multiplies exponentially, and even more dire and unearthly Outsiders make themselves known. It is said that, during one of these months, one of the Courts will be overthrown and replaced. By who or what—and what these new Outsiders want from humanity—is a mystery.
