Second Library
The second of the three great libraries gifted to the peoples of Erdde by the New Gods. It is located in the upper Iril Valley in Sigsland in northern Ettrea.
Since the First Library is now lost to Elves and men and the Third Library has never been discovered, the Second Library is the only one of the gods' libraries available to citizens of the Empire.
All of the library's lore is written down in Celestial Glyphs - the written language of the New Gods - in large, heavy tomes. Many of the academics who work at the library are Readers - elves who have devoted their lives to learning glyphs. After several centuries of learning, a Reader will be able to translate enough of the glyphs into a language that the Scholars of the library can understand. The Scholars are the ones who compile the lore into usable form. Most Scholars are also High Elves , with the occasional human, dwarf or gnome.
Most Scholars devote years of their lives to working at the library, although sometimes specialists in a particular field will be allowed to study there if the Readers have found lore pertaining to that field. Their application has to be approved by the Curator, the library's senior Scholar.
The day-to-day running of the library - from handling diplomatic relations with the nobility and the Church to mundane trivialities like supervising the kitchens and the washerwomen - is the responsibility of the Proctor.
Although hundreds of miles from the principality, the land surrounding the library is governed as an enclave of Dimrillien.
