Lizardfolk

In the verdant jungles of Ezzuth, the murky swamps of the Midkingdoms and the blasted deserts of Qadoris and Tamuz, a hardy, scaly and diverse cluster of reptilian races make their homes, known to others under the rather oversimplified banner of 'lizardfolk'.   Compelled by a mindset alien to the warm-blooded, Lizardfolk can seem inscrutable to others, exploding into tremendous, unstoppable violence without any exterior sign of anger or distress and shouldering even the greatest burdens or experiencing the deepest of sorrows without outwardly flinching.   Their culture is far deeper and richer - and certainly older - than the warmfolk generally appreciate, but the Lizardfolk see little point in sharing it with outsiders, or indeed, sharing it at all. It is so ingrained into a Lizardfolk's psyche that the complex web of traditions, behaviors, triggers and responses that make up Lizardfolk lifestyle are rarely thought of consciously. They simply are the way things are.   Lizardfolk tend toward a rather ruthless practicality and are patient sometimes to the point of frustration for others. They see little value in hoarding resources, wealth or possessions for later if they are not immediately useful now. Lizardfolk culture procures as needed and is resilient enough to survive almost any scarcity. They respond positively to affection but find nuances such as familial and romantic love, hatred, passion, vengeance, mercy and regret quite baffling and serving no practical purpose. Lizardfolk value their allies for adding to their survivability and achievement of goals and see the destruction of enemies as necessity rather than emotional investment, and thus do so as quickly and brutally as possible.   Lizardfolk seem so unemotional and selfishly pragmatic that it can take a warmfolk companion completely by surprise when one displays an act of great loyalty or sacrifice for another. This lack of outward display of emotion is as much physiological as anything else; Lizardfolk simply don't have the facial muscles for a wide range of emotional expression. This does not mean they do not feel; a sense of a Lizardfolk's mood relies on awareness of subtle expulsions of breath, posture, raising of fins or spines, emissions of scent, and changes of skin hue.
