Ione spends a year undergoing experimentation.

For a full year, Ione undergoes various experiments in an attempt to grant her telepathy. Six major trials strengthen the abilities she already has, but nothing new is gained.   During this time, Ione is largely absent from her duties. It becomes obvious to all how necessary she is to the success of First Class, especially in terms of keeping peace between Aris and Nerissa. The two are able to put their differences aside to care for and protect Ione while she is vulnerable. They also assign Ione's tasks to other initiates they trust.
