Jenni pushes Rissa too far, causing permanent damage.

With training continuing to escalate in intensity, Jenni ups the stakes. The losers of a match are punished, usually through Jenni's preferred method of stimulating the brain's pain center or bringing on hallucinations.   After she loses a sparring match to Aris, Nerissa's punishment goes horribly wrong. Overtaken by her sadistic streak, Jenni causes Nerissa permanent injury. With ruined nerves in her neck and a completely twisted jaw, Nerissa's worst loss is 80-90% of the sight in her right eye.   Aris attempts to fix the damage and is able to lessen Nerissa's pain and stop her injuries from deteriorating. However, her eye cannot be saved and she will always be nearly blind on that side.   Her relationship with Aris suffers for a time, as Nerissa blames her for the accident, but she eventually realizes Aris was only acting on survival instinct and never wanted her hurt. Nerissa cannot bring her rage to its true target, but she loses all respect for Jenni.   Nerissa decides to stay in First Class due to the bond she has developed with Ione, who understands her pain and helps her adapt to the loss of her sight.
