Time Beyond Reckoning

The gods drew lots to determine who would claim what sphere for their people and their influence.

The first gods lived together peacefully enough for many years, building and destroying and tweaking their creations. When the multiverse was done, it came time to divide the territory among them. Avandra suggested that they draw lots to ensure the fairest division for the young mortals—with mere chance driving the no god could claim more than their fair share for their own.   The gods agreed. Erathis and Asmodeus created the rules of the lot. Melora gathered the stones from the very bones of the new world. Moradin crafted the close-topped bowl from which they would draw. Ioun divined the proper place for the drawing, where the seventeen spheres were aligned and equidistant. Torog and Orcus put together the celebrations and games that would follow.   But Corellon's contribution was to take away. He rigged the bowl so that there was one less lot than there were gods to claim them. Gruumsh was the last to draw, and he reached his hand into an empty bowl. Perhaps the god of magic had meant it merely as a playful prank, but the consequences would be catastrophic for gods and mortals. Only Gruumsh and Ioun did not laugh as the gods drifted off to feasting. For they knew the truth. The spheres had been divided while the gates between them were open, when wind and word passed freely. No place would accept Gruumsh's dominion, and his people were cursed to find no home in any place.   It was here that the seeds of revenge were planted in the Wandering God's heart.
