The Followers of the King that Never Was
The Followers - or Loyalists, as they like to style themselves - are a supposedly ancient sect whose entire actions and believes revolve around the betrayal legend, often called Coniuratio. They are led by a mysterious and potentially equally ancient creature called The Minister, who claims to once have served faithfully under the King that Never Was as his foremost servant.
Then, the King arose: With no laws existing, he imposed his will to force both time and space into a continuous form, thereby creating the world of Engwilt and establishing the first civilization on it. Yet it was no kingdom in the sense we understand it now - he imposed no additional laws, and death was still not invented. His only role as the king was to ensure equality so that nobody was able to create any new laws that would profit themselves or harm others.
However, there were those who would plot against him: those who dreamt of commanding endless armies of slaves bound to their will and shape reality to their will. Those were the Judgements, intent on enslaving reality to their will. However, they were too few and too weak to challenge the king and his loyalists directly, so they came up with a great plot: they prepared the laws to enact death - namely by ripping the soul from the body and devouring it, so it may never find its way back - and erected great machines that would kill countless innocents in the few split seconds before the King could strike the law down again.
Once their fiendish ploy succeeded, their next law was to forbid the king from existing: deeming him too dangerous to just kill, he was banished from reality itself, forbidding the very fabric of reality from enabling his existence, giving him the name of 'King that Never Was'. Next, they established all the dreadful laws that govern mortals now - gravity, ageing, forgetfulness. All things put in place solely so these new gods could ensure that none could challenge them anymore.
The Betrayal Legend - Coniuratio
The legend claims that there was once pure lawlessness - starting from constantly shifting lands, over distances that refused to stay the same to the very flow of time being mangled. During that time, creatures had no fixed form and both life and death were unknown concepts. Then, the King arose: With no laws existing, he imposed his will to force both time and space into a continuous form, thereby creating the world of Engwilt and establishing the first civilization on it. The Cult Today
The Cult has long retreated underground into the Underworld - the only place they are save from the god's wrath for their heresy and spreading of poisonous lies, as the clergy puts it. They are in constant conflict with the temples, however, their machinations are only rarely revealed, often centuries in the making. Due to their goal of dethroning the gods and restoring their king, they show little interest in the day-to-day dealings of the mortal realms, although it is said that they have immense influence amongst the ruling class which they use to slowly steer civilization towards a place where they can challenge their sworn enemies. The Followers
