The Avatar

The Avatar is an Ancient being of unknown power and intent. He is widely believed to be a powerful demon, yet some claim that his very existence is interwoven with the Correspondence itself. What is known for certain is that he lends his power to certain individuals, permitting them to utter the Correspondence a lot easier: the Warlocks.

In Recorded History

Reference to it can be found in texts tracing all the way back to the Engwiltans, and every other (known) precursor civilization has some mention of it in their writings. The following is a conclusion of a disgraced scholar who spent his whole life dedicated to this topic:

[...]The first question many ask when wanting to learn about it is: "What is the Avatar?" which in and of itself is a terrible question to ask. It is obvious that there is nothing quite like it: Far more communicative than the Judgements (TN: Gods), far more mysterious than the Demons, and far more persistent than any other being could hope to be. As such, the only answer to this question is already contained in it: The Avatar is the Avatar.

The most baffling element of the old writings must be the Ouroboros: It is consistently mentioned, yet not once has it appeared in our civilization. The Ashya go into the most details about this: Preparing for an event they called 'the Cleansing', the Avatar granted certain people this sign, who would then go on to become champions trying to stop this approaching apocalyptic event. Have they managed to stop this cleansing or was it the very reason that brought about their downfall? Does that mean the Avatar cares about the preservation of Society? Would that mean that our own civilization doesn't need saving? Or maybe it's already too late?
If only those damned clerics would give me access to the old ruins... the things that could be learned from them!

Warlocks

The Warlocks are considered heretical by some Temples and are generally regarded with a great deal more mistrust than other types of mages - even though the anti-magic sentiment is on the rise globally.

Visions

It is a well-known fact that none can summon the Avatar: it is only possible to attempt to catch his attention with various deeds and rites, hoping for the fateful visions it provides. It is largely unknown which pattern it's following when doing so, since it sometimes appears to powerful nobles and heroes as well as simple peasants.
Once acquired, these Visions will follow the Warlock for the rest of their life, sometimes bringing important insights with them, but usually being completely incomprehensible. The first visions will however guide them to their supernatural powers, teaching them how to utter the Correspondence.
Its appearance changes from vision to vision, and indeed Warlocks find it impossible to describe when asked for it. It seems to constantly shift out of focus and neither does it appear to be possible where exactly the edges of its figure are. He never talks either - he relays all the information and knowledge to the Warlocks over emotions and memories which can sometimes be so strong that they pass out.

Relationships

Warlocks are known to form different kinds of bonds with it, strongly dependent on how they perceive its visions. Some are scared of it and attempt everything to suppress the visions, often resorting to suicide when all else fails.
However, there are also those who form something akin to a friendship with it, finding respite and security in its visions and becoming trusting of it. This often occurs when the Warlock is a cast out (possibly for the very fact of being one) and they have no one else who accompany them, since there is no known record of the Avatar abandoning any of its disciples.

Worship

A strange cult of worship formed around this mysterious figure, comprised of both Warlocks and normal people of all walks of life and races. It is, to a large part, founded on the writings of the disgraced Scholar and emphasizes equality, like the Avatar displays it by choosing his disciples indiscriminately.
Warlocks are almost considered holy in this cult and they hold a considerable amount of sway over them. Since there is no other way to contact their deity, they rely on them to relay its will and try to extrapolate commands from their visions.
Needless to say, the other major temples look down upon this cult and call it a heresy: they see it as a demon corrupting the populace and leading them astray from the righteous path of the true gods.
