The Ethereal Plane is a ghostly, mist-shrouded realm that exists alongside the Material Plane, partially overlapping it like a reflection seen through fogged glass. It is a place of transition, echoes, and unseen passage, where solid matter becomes insubstantial and the boundary between worlds grows thin.

To most mortals, the Ethereal Plane is unseen and unfelt — yet it is always present, just beyond the edge of perception.

Overview

The Ethereal Plane appears as a pale, colorless version of the Material Plane. Landscapes, structures, and terrain exist here as faint outlines, blurred and distorted by swirling mist. Walls become hazy barriers, sounds are muted or absent, and living creatures appear only as ghostly silhouettes.

Unlike the Astral Plane, which exists apart from physical reality, the Ethereal Plane is intimately tied to the world of Enderlin, mirroring its geography and features almost exactly.

The Border Ethereal and the Deep Ethereal

The Ethereal Plane is commonly understood to have two distinct regions:

• The Border Ethereal
  This region directly overlaps the Material Plane. Creatures here can observe the physical world but cannot interact with it. Most ethereal travel, haunting phenomena, and ghostly manifestations occur within this layer.
• The Deep Ethereal
  Beyond the mirrored edges of the world lies the Deep Ethereal — a vast, drifting expanse of thick mist and shifting currents. Within it float demiplanes, pocket realities, and strange fragments of unfinished worlds.

Travelers who stray too far into the Deep Ethereal risk becoming lost among endless fog and uncharted realms.

Nature of the Plane

The Ethereal Plane is defined by several strange properties:

• Intangibility: Physical matter offers no resistance. Creatures pass through walls, terrain, and objects as though they were smoke.
• Muted sensation: Sound is distant, colors are washed out, and physical sensation is dulled.

• Demiplane denizens dwell within pocket realms drifting in the Deep Ethereal.

Most creatures encountered here are elusive, dangerous, or deeply unnatural.

Access to the Ethereal Plane is possible through magic and rare phenomena:

• Spells such as etherealness or blink partially or fully shift a creature into the plane.
• Ethereal curtains and thin places naturally occur near ancient ruins, sites of great tragedy, or powerful magical disturbances.
• Demiplane portals may be found drifting within the Deep Ethereal, often without warning.

While movement through solid matter makes travel deceptively easy, navigation is difficult — landmarks are faint, and distance can be misleading.
