NOTE: You can also create your character in DND Beyond and import the sheet to your Enderlin World Anvil character.

Step 1: Choose a Species

Your species determines your character’s species, physical traits, innate abilities, and sometimes their culture.

What to do: Pick a species that fits your character’s story and where they come from in Enderlin.

Examples in Enderlin:

  • A Gnome raised on the island of Avalon, working in a mechanical workshop.
  • An Elf of Lóchlindor, a sorcerer studying at the great library of Lóchlindor.
  • A Dwarf from the Hold of Barak Vhuldar, specialized in trade between the Underdark and the surface.
  • A Human merchant from the League of the Emerald Coast or Portavira.

Step 2: Choose a Class

Your class defines what your character can do in combat, magic, and other challenges.

What to do: Pick a class that matches your character concept and background.

Examples in Enderlin:

  • A Paladin from Zaharat al-Nar, champion of Bahamut.
  • A Ranger patrolling the forests of Elenvaleis.
  • A Wizard studying Magirite in Zaralem.
  • A Fighter in the Goliath army of Hrafngard.

Step 3: Assign Ability Scores

Ability scores determine how strong, intelligent, and agile your character is.

What to do: Use standard array, point buy, or roll dice to assign scores to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

Examples in Enderlin:

  • A Goliath warrior of Hrafngard prioritizes Strength and Constitution.
  • An Elenvaleis elf ranger focuses on Dexterity and Wisdom.
  • A Zaharat al-Nar cleric emphasizes Charisma and Strength.

Step 4: Choose a Background

Backgrounds represent your character’s upbringing, career, or social standing.
What to do: Pick a background that fits your character’s history. Then apply your +2 and +1 Ability Score bonuses and note the Origin Feat your background grants you.

Examples in Enderlin:

  • Merchant – A trader from Portavira or the Emerald Coast.
  • Criminal– a criminal in one of the big Imperial cities of Mittemark.
  • Guild Artisan – An adamantine smith in Kharaz-Dum.
  • Folk Hero – A roming knight from the countryside of Cormerault.

Step 5: Choose Skills, Tools, and Proficiencies

Skills and tools reflect what your character is good at, from combat to crafting to social interaction.

What to do: Choose skills from your class and background, then select any tools, instruments, or languages granted by your background or species.

Examples in Enderlin:

  • A Barak Vhuldar dwarf might take Smith’s Tools and Insight.
  • A Portaviran merchant may favor Persuasion and Deception.
  • An Elenvaleis ranger could pick Nature and Stealth.

Step 6: Pick Starting Equipment

Equipment includes weapons, armor, tools, and other items your character begins with.

What to do: Use your class and background starting equipment or buy gear with your starting gold.

Lore examples:

  • Obsidian weapons for Zaharat al-Nar warriors.
  • Mithril armor for Lóchlindor elves.
  • Spirit seeds as currency in Elenvaleis.
  • Desert survival gear for Varrak-Khul clans.

Step 7: Calculate Combat Stats

Determine your:

  • Armor Class (AC)
  • Initiative
  • Speed
  • Hit Points (HP)

Tip: Your species and class affect these numbers. Hrafngard Goliaths are resilient, Elenvaleis elves are agile, and dwarves of Karak Azkahr are heavily armored.

Step 8: Spellcasting (If Applicable)

If your class uses magic, you will need:

  • Known/prepared spells
  • Spell slots
  • Spell attack bonus and saving throw DC

Lore examples:

  • Wizards in Zaralem harness Magirite.
  • Druids in Elenvaleis draw power from the Fey Realm.
  • Clerics of Bahamut in Zaharat al-Nar receive divine guidance.

Step 9: Add Personality and Backstory

Finally, bring your character to life:

  • Name – Reflect regional or cultural styles.
  • Appearance – Height, hair color, and distinguishing features.
  • Alignment – Lawful dwarves, desert clans with honor codes, free-spirited elves.
  • Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, Flaws – Inspired by your species, class, and background.
  • Backstory Hooks – Connections to kingdoms, guilds, factions, or family legacy.

With these steps, you now have a fully functional D&D 5e character, deeply rooted in the lore of Enderlin.
