The Beastlands — The Untamed Wilds

The Beastlands are a primal Outer Plane of untouched nature, instinct, and freedom. Neither wholly good nor cruel, this realm embodies the raw balance of the natural world — where life flourishes, hunts, grows, and dies without malice or mercy. To the peoples of Enderlin, the Beastlands are seen as nature unbound by civilization or moral judgment.

Here, the wild reigns supreme, and all creatures live according to instinct rather than law or ideology.

Nature of the Plane

The Beastlands are an endless expanse of forests, plains, mountains, rivers, and skies in their most vibrant and dangerous forms. The land teems with life at every scale, from towering ancient beasts to swarms of insects and unseen predators.

Unlike the Material Plane, the cycle of life and death in the Beastlands is swift and constant. Creatures hunt without cruelty, and prey flees without resentment. Survival is not evil — it is simply natural.

Time behaves strangely here. Days, nights, and seasons may pass at irregular rates, and some regions exist in perpetual twilight or moonlight.

The Three Layers

The Beastlands are traditionally divided into three layers, each representing a different aspect of the wild:

  • Krigala — Endless savannas, rolling hills, and open skies, home to herds, predators, and wide-ranging beasts.
  • Brux — Vast jungles and forests of towering trees, thick with life, danger, and ancient growth.
  • Karasuthra — A realm of eternal night beneath the stars, where nocturnal creatures and primal instincts dominate.

Each layer reflects a different rhythm of nature, yet all are deeply connected.

Inhabitants

The Beastlands are inhabited by:

  • Awakened animals and intelligent beasts
  • Lycanthropes, many of whom see the plane as sacred
  • Nature-aligned celestials and spirits
  • Souls of mortals who lived in harmony with the wild

Predation is common, but cruelty is rare. Beasts kill to eat, not to dominate or torment.

Souls and the Afterlife

Mortals who valued freedom, balance, and respect for nature may find their souls drawn to the Beastlands. Here, they often take on bestial forms or live alongside animals, shedding the complexities of mortal society.

Some souls remain as guardians of the wild, while others eventually merge with the plane itself, becoming part of its endless cycle.

Travel and Influence

Druids, rangers, and shamans of Enderlin sometimes speak of visions of the Beastlands during deep communion with nature. Planar crossings may occur in ancient forests, untouched wilderness, or places where civilization has never taken hold.

Visitors often find the plane exhilarating but unforgiving. Civilization, heavy armor, and rigid hierarchy are liabilities here.

Role in the Multiverse

Within the Great Wheel, the Beastlands serve as a reminder that morality is not the only force that shapes existence. Life thrives without law, and balance does not require judgment.

To walk the Beastlands is to understand that nature does not ask permission — it simply is.
