Opsianno

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Opsianno are enigmatic beings forged entirely from obsidian, their bodies smooth and gleaming with an almost ethereal sheen. Their form is humanoid, with four limbs, yet their structure is far from ordinary. The obsidian that composes them is both brittle and resilient, capable of breaking along clean, sharp cleavages when struck, revealing inner depths of molten magma that flow through their veins like a living, fiery river. Their internal circulatory system is a molten concoction of magma, which requires an environment of intense heat to remain in a liquid state. This liquid core is essential to their vitality, as it fuels their physical functions and grants them the strength and agility that their otherwise fragile exterior cannot fully explain. Should the temperature around them drop too low, this molten substance solidifies, rendering the Opsianno into a dormant state, unable to function. During this state, they enter a form of hibernation, their consciousness slipping into an unconscious slumber until the temperature rises once again, reigniting their inner flame and restoring them to life. The Opsianno must be careful of their environment, as their survival is closely tied to the heat that courses through their being.

Biological Traits

Born from Magma: Due to their stone-like nature and resistance to burning, Opsianno are completely immune to fire and extreme heat. They can immerse themselves in lava or magma without suffering any harm, their obsidian forms unaffected by the searing temperatures. This innate resilience allows them to thrive in environments others would deem lethal, further highlighting their connection to the fiery depths of the earth.   Cave Dweller: Opsianno have long dwelled in caves where light is minimal or non-existent. Remove any penalty to see due to Low-Light.   Heated Joints: Due to the constant flow of molten magma within them, Opsianno have a natural aversion to anything that can impede this heat. When submerged in water, they experience a cooling effect that slows their movements. In shallow water, up to knee height, their movement speed is reduced by 10%. At chest height, this penalty increases to 25%, and they also suffer a 10% penalty to all actions requiring bodily movement, including combat, somatic magic, and skills involving physical movement. If fully submerged, the penalties escalate to 50% for movement speed and 25% for all movement-based rolls.   Cold and Frost damage also hampers their speed, reducing it by an amount equal to the damage dealt, divided by ten in meters (with a minimum reduction of 1 meter). In extreme cases, this can slow them to a complete halt, with movement speed potentially dropping to 0. In environments with consistently cold temperatures, these penalties apply continually unless the Opsianno is properly equipped to resist the chill, further hindering their abilities in such conditions.   Large Lung Capacity: An Opsianno can hold its breath for twice the normal period of a creature its size.   Rock Camouflage: As a living being composed of rock, an Opsianno possesses a natural +12 bonus to Hide checks when in a rocky or stone-laden environment.   Rocks don’t Float: Opsianno are naturally incapable of swimming, always failing swim checks and sinking to the bottom of any body of water. However, lava and magma provide an exception to this limitation. In such environments, Opsianno gain a significant advantage, receiving a +50 bonus to Swim checks and displaying a natural buoyancy that allows them to move freely and effortlessly through the molten flow.   Rock-Hard Skin: Opsianno are Stone subtype instead of Flesh subtype. They are considered to always be equipped with Stone Armor. This armor does not impede any ability that requires the Opsianno to be unarmored. If other armor is equipped, the Opsianno can only gain benefit from one.

Genetics and Reproduction

An Opsianno's reproduction is a dramatic and sacred process, centered around a ritual of immense sacrifice. The parent willingly offers their molten core to create new life, a ceremonial act of profound significance. This ritual takes place in the presence of flowing lava, a potent symbol of the Opsianno's fiery essence. During the ceremony, the parent stands in the searing heat, surrendering their molten heart, which is then consumed by the ritual, leaving behind only their obsidian husk. From this husk, a single offspring is born, emerging fully formed, imbued with the parent’s energy and the intense heat of the surrounding lava. In rare and extraordinary circumstances, the ritual results in the birth of twin offspring, both drawn from the parent’s essence. These rare births are seen as a blessing, a powerful omen that carries great significance within Opsianno culture.   In exceptional cases, a slain Opsianno may also serve as a donor of their molten heart, allowing for the continuation of life even in death. If the Opsianno’s body remains intact and the heart is harvested within seven days of their demise, it can be used in the ritual to create new life. This practice, while not common, provides a means of furthering the Opsianno population, particularly in times of war or strife when numbers may dwindle. However, this act carries with it a heavy cultural weight, as it involves drawing on the life force of the fallen, adding a layer of reverence and solemnity to the creation of new life.

Growth Rate & Stages

Opsianno take many years to reach adulthood, with their childhood spanning nearly a century. During this prolonged period, their bodies slowly mature as their inner magmatic circulatory system flows and solidifies, gradually shaping their form. The molten magma within them slowly hardens over time, fostering steady growth, though the changes are subtle and occur incrementally. This slow transformation is essential to their development, allowing their obsidian exteriors to harden and their molten cores to stabilize, until they are fully formed and capable of harnessing the full strength and power of their fiery essence.

Ecology and Habitats

The Opsianno live in a mountainous and volcanic region of the planet.

Dietary Needs and Habits

An Opsianno's diet consists of various forms of rock dust. While they do not need to drink, a favoured beverage is boiling lava.

Beauty Ideals

Opsianno beauty is defined by the dazzling shininess and glossy sheen of their obsidian skin, which reflects light in a mesmerizing way. Their radiant, smooth surfaces are a mark of their vitality and strength. In addition to this natural allure, a unique form of fashion among the Opsianno involves carving intricate 'tattoos' into their rocky skin. These markings, etched with precision, enhance their appearance and are often seen as expressions of personal identity, status, or cultural significance. The carvings gleam against the natural gloss of their bodies, adding an artistic element to their already stunning forms.
