Redface Condition in The Encyclopaedia Tellurica | World Anvil

Redface

Redface is a reaction to atmospheric chemical compounds encountered in some of the more cloistered neighbourhoods of Bailymena, such as The Styles or Ashcroft .  Because most reactions are mild, Redface is seen as just a nuisance to daily life. However, although rare, severe reactions can occur and will require you seek medical assistance.

An Unsightly Condition

Causes

Exposure to the noxious chemicals which concentrate in cloistered neighbourhoods of Bailymena, such as Ashcroft, Chemic Alley, or the Styles.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms include:
  • a runny or blocked nose
  • red, itchy, watery eyes
  • a burning sensation in moist areas
  • sneezing, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath
  • a red, itchy rash
  • worsening of asthma or eczema symptoms
  • in advanced cases, a putrid body odour.

Treatment

Once a patient is removed from exposure to the chemical agents which cause Redface, ¼ thumbroot pastille w. 3 oz. #1 tonic for 14 nights will remove existing symptoms and provide limited immunity. Most magical cures have effect, although Horshak's Panacea is preferred.  Any reputable alchemist or conjure-shop will be able to clear this up for you cheaply and quickly.

Prognosis

Death from Redface is rare. When legitimately caused by exposure to chemical agents in the air, it's either poisoning or a severe allergic reaction that kills the patient. When used as a euphemism for the inevitable consequences of criminal activity in Bailymena, it needs no further explanation.

Prevention

Those  concerned with maintaining a pristine appearance can use any number of barrier protections to avoid contact with the fumes that cause Redface.

Absorption. Non contagious or infectious.

Affected Groups

Residents and visitors to certain low-end neighbourhoods in Bailymena.

Cultural reception

To have Redface is a sure marker of low social status in Bailymena, because it acts as a sure and inarguable sign that you're either from or frequent a bad part of town.

Sequela

Because of its constant wearing effect on the immune system and bodily defenses, Redface makes patients more susceptible to other conditions of the skin and respiratory tract, as well as fungal and bacterial infections.
