Loke Angström

Commander Loke Angström

Angström was born a slave to giants across the Sypi River. His parents and their parents had been raised to serve as the domestic servants to disgusting hill giants living in the eastern outskirts of the Giant Lands. They required a variety of humiliating tasks and efforts by their slaves, and Loke proved one of the most unruly. After being sold to another, even worse, hold of giants, Loke began to make plans to escape and find his way to freedom. An opportunity emerged in 1020 when a different family of giants lost their slaves to a mass breakout and escape. The confusion caused by this escape enabled Loke to make plans of his own.   In 1022, Loke's owners were busy feuding over territory ownership with another band of hill giants, and they left their hold to fight out the problem. They were arrogant enough to bring their slaves with them, and Loke saw an opportunity to escape. With no bindings or restrictions, he was able to free himself and quickly make his way west, with the food and supplies brought for the giants' meeting. Although his owners pursued him, Loke was able to make his way to the Sypi River and despite the current, he began to swim across, under the watchful view of the warriors of Old Crossing Keep. With giants close behind him warded off by the siege weapons of the castle, Loke's only challenge was fighting the current.   He nearly died in the attempt but was washed ashore at an inlet near the town of Burrow. Local traders found him and brought him into the inn, offering him care, despite the war taxing their resources. When he asked about the castle that had saved him from his masters, he learned of the River Watch and their capabilities. He immediately went to Burrow Keep and pledged his loyalty to the Watch. After a year's training, he was assigned to the same keep, and offered a position within the garrison. He advocated for the protection of the people of Burrow when the Sihka Tribe turned up several years later, remembering what they had done for him after his escape, and eagerly fighting against those who would persecute them.   Loke saw ample combat during the Civil War, being attached as a Watch liaison with the Nors Tribe, due to his race. The Nors respected Loke immensely both for his escape and his stature, and he began to integrate more into Confederate society. During his time, he met a Nors woman and the two were married upon the end of the war. His wife followed his assignments in the Watch, and while they did not have further children, their home life was said to be a happy one. Loke was assigned to Northwatch Keep, after appealing to be kept closer to his wife's homeland. While serving there, he became famous among the watch for his daring patrols and his charity and aid towards the Nors people. When the former commander of the wreckage of Slough Keep died from illness in 1039, Loke was offered command, and he accepted the promotion, as he packed his family up, and headed south. Since taking command, he has done what he could, dedicating his soldiers to reconstructing a palisade, advocating for more support for giant observation in the region.
