Dwarf

Dwarves are divided into two groups in Emicara, hill dwarves and mountain dwarves. The hill dwarves are what many refer to as those who live in the Civilized Lands in the southeast, out of the kingdom of Kiralyno. Mountain dwarves hail from a number of small and isolated mountain kingdoms throughout the Apps, but recent disasters, both military and otherwise, have led to a large amount of immigration into the human kingdom of Alsona.

Emicara Dwarves in D&D Fifth Edition

Dwarves in Emicara use the same statistics used for the character creation of dwarves as provided in the Player's Handbook. Deurgar as listed in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes are not currently provided for in the setting, but there is no reason that they could not exist in isolated mountains or underground areas outside of Emicara. Use with discretion.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Hill and Mountain dwarves alike speak the same language: Dwarven. While the accents and dialects do differ regionally, the differences are much less distinct than they would be among different human nations and cultures.

History

Dwarves have lived among humans as long as either species can remember. While the human emperors and kings built their civilizations above the earth, the dwarves were burrowed beneath it. In dark times, the dwarves often disappeared underground for centuries at a time, avoiding conflict with significantly larger and more prosperous civilizations. The Nameless Empire was notoriously oppressive towards the dwarves and thus many fled into hidden mountain fortresses and sealed the gates, remaining isolated from their would-be oppressors. The collapse of the Empire was a great boon for the dwarves, and despite the wanton destruction it caused across Emicara, the dwarves emerged and thrived. Their underground cities were proof against the magic that had destroyed the Empire, and offered a fresh point of rebuilding civilization. The dwarves gave the tattered human lands technology and aid in rebuilding their own homes, a debt that is well remembered among dwarves, and often forgotten among humans.   The dwarves possessed numerous strongholds throughout the Apps Mountains, but over the past eight hundred years, dwarven fortunes have been taking a turn for the worst. Many dwarves are forced to live above the ground in human societies, often only having a second class citizen status in nations following the Church of the One Sun. The ancient citadels have mostly fallen, with a few tightly guarded exceptions. Recent devastating civil wars in the northern Apps and wars of conquest by the Shin Empire have led to most dwarves fleeing to Alsona. There they were met with indentured servitude and harsh conditions until a rebellion led to the establishment of the new dwarven kingdom of Valtos Wingo.
