Crumbled Columns

Crumbled Columns, often shortened to Columns, is the largest 'civilized' settlement to be found deep in the The Skyrian Steppes and is somewhat of an anomaly for its size. Nowhere in the Skyrian Steppes is there a larger collection of stone dwellings than the Columns. Columns is also unique in that the stones that have been used to cobble together its houses have almost all exclusively been salvaged from nearby ruins of gigantic size. Throughout the Skyrian Steppes are scattered various towering columns covered in mysterious murals, presumably left behind by an unknowable progenitor people. The nomads that roam the Steppes leave the columns well enough alone, using them as waypoints, but the explorers from Darrenland that were looking for a suitable place to settle tore down some of these columns in want of a suitable quarry. It is unknown where this stone originally came from, but it certainly makes for suitable masonry.    Compared to the major cities of Emdar, Columns is only a small settlement, but compared to the humble settlements surrounding it might as well be a vibrant metropolis. It is the second largest city in Skyria; only the House Reimdal seat of Erstal houses more people. Since Erdal is practically Darren in location and culture, however, the people of Columns often consider themselves to be the true Skyrians, though the nomads of the steppes, who shun the city, might scoff at this notion. It is true though that isolation that comes to living in the Columns ensured the culture has grown isolated from the rest of Emdar. It attracts a rough and tumble sort of person- someone who might have reason to escape their situation might find a new life here. Most expeditions into the Steppes begin and end in the Columns and it is seen as the last bastion of civilization before the wilderness proper.
