Omduri Language in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Omduri

Believed to have been spoken by an ancient civilization of the same name, Omduri is a strong language unlike many other languages spoken on Emaxus. Whereas most languages follow the same structure of speaking as Common, albeit in their own script and alphabet, Omduri is not "woven from the same cloth," if you will. Rather than being composed of a dictionary of words which have tenses and such, and are then strung together into sentences and phrases, Omduri is built upon certain words which, when said with certain emotions and inflections, take on different meanings. So, in a completely different style and fashion, Omduri achieves the same ideas of tenses, participles, and other language conventions.    What little is known of Omduri is gleaned from broken tablets and ancient parchments, many of which have to be magically restored to the furthest stretches of arcane capabilities just to have a shred of use. Alas, no living speakers (at least none that are known) of Omduri exist, and the language is so alien that translating is extremely difficult and often incomplete. It is believed that the civilization of Omduri called Drumis their home, and either fell during the Age of Rebirth or were wiped out in the Reckoning. As such, attempting to learn more of the language and the culture behind it is akin to searching for a needle in a haystack several hundred miles wide.

Arcane Applications

Something extremely interesting of note is that of the exceedingly rare translations of Omduri, an even smaller handful of them hint at an extraordinarily advanced culture of arcanists and sages. It is believed that the Omduri called some ancient desert their home (due to the method by which their script has been discovered, which is often sandstone tablets and papyrus) and dominated their harsh landscape with unbelievable arcane might, impressive even for the Age of Rebirth. If these beliefs and rumors could be validated, and the arcane strength of Omduri understood, then perhaps some of the Age of Rebirth's splendor could be reclaimed.
