King Irathin Mourn I Character in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

King Irathin Mourn I

"The ends justify the means. Always."

Despotic king of the Mournians and head of Mourn's rich aristocracy, King Irathin I is a complex man with simple desires. Born in Loria, Irathin is of Theussaun blood. On paper, he's a paragon of Theussaun culture: industrious, pragmatic, and all about unity. The problem many people have with Irathin arises when theory leaves paper and meets Irathin's methods. The king is known for his short temper and long plans. He's just as likely to see a five-year civil project through to its end with relatively relaxed working conditions and good bonuses as he is to execute a few farms worth of serfs just for not meeting tax quotas.   Some say he is a minor noble and cutthroat merchant playing at king. Objectively speaking, they would be right. There is no royalty in Irathin's blood. But, is it not a man's right to forge his own path through Emaxus? And, though his means have been cruel, Irathin forged his crown with his own two hands---literally and metaphorically. Is he any less a king than the Theussaun line?

War Dogs and Blood Money

The Mourn family was a founding party in the Wolfcast Company, one of two major arms manufacturers in the Theussaun Protectorate. Across the Orakgran War, the Heliestheos Crisis, and the Generals' War, the Mourns made an astounding fortune. When Irathin inherited the family's holdings at the ripe age of 22, he made a bold decision: liquidate everything, bring his family, servants, and mercenaries to Drumis, and forge a new destiny.   With his wealth and mercenary army, Irathin conquered the original occupants of Kingdom Mourn's lands, bringing both settled town and native clan to heel. From this foundational population, Irathin continued to build wealth from arms deals and blood money, with the new income source of dealing in Drumian relics. As warlords and minor nobles came from far and wide to stake their claim as Boyars, Irathin's reputation as a war dog only grew, and it's not a reputation he cares to shake.

An Unquenchable Lust for Power

At the end of the day, Irathin cares solely for power. He has heirs on the off-chance he dies, but his retinue of mages and Drumian relics have seen to his prolonged life. He drives the Mournian Exploration Company (MEC) to gather more and more Pre-Reckoning artifacts, but he cares for the reclaimed knowledge and technology only insofar as how it can increase his power. To Irathin, everything is a means to an end.   Whatever his true ends are, no one knows but he. To an outside viewer, however, it would seem the only end is more power, and the hunt for that never ceases.
