Class Progression

Class Features

As a wizard, you gain the following class features.

Spellcasting

Starting at 1st level, as a student of arcane magic, you have a spellbook containing spells that show the first glimmerings of your true power.   You'll need to familiarlize yourself with the rules of spellcasting, and you can choose your spells from the Wizard Spell List.

Cantrips

At 1st level, you memorize three cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list. You memorize additional wizard cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Memorized column of the Wizard table. Cantrips do not count against the number of spells you have memorized.

Spellbook

At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice. Your spellbook is the repository of the wizard spells you know.   Your spellbook is a unique compilation of spells, complete with incantations, arcane formulas, and margin notes. Your spellbook's form is up to you. It might be a musty, leather-bound journal, an elegant gold inlaid tome, or an assortment of thin metal disks connected to a brass ring.

Spells Memorized of 1st Level and Higher

You have memorized a number of spells in your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The number of spells you can memorize increases each time your Intelligence modifier or level increases. You cannot memorize a spell that has a higher level than your maximum spell level (as shown in the Wizard Class Progression table).   You can memorize any spell that you've transcribed into your spellbook by spending 2 hours per level of the spell, during which you rote learn the components and mechanics of the new spell, if memorizing this spell would exceed your maximum number of memorized spells, you must choose another spell to remove from your memory.

Prepared Spells

You can cast a wizard spell from your spellbook at any time by preparing it. You can prepare a spell by using an action to look through your spellbook, find the necessary incantations, and begin focusing on the spell. Once you do so, you can cast that spell at any point during the next 1 minute, or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell). If you lose your concentration during that time or if the minute elapses, you lose the incantations and must prepare the spell again.

Spellcasting Ability

You cast your Wizard spells using the Arcane Tradition, for which Intelligence is your spellcasting ability.

Spellcasting Focus

You can use an arcane focus as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.

Learning Spells of 1st Level and Higher

To learn a spell, you must spend 2 hours per level of the spell, during which you must receive arcane instruction from a person who knows the spell, study a spell tome containing the spell, or copy the incantations from a spell scroll in your possession. Your GM may determine the cost and availability of these resources based on where you are in the world.   Whenever you learn a new spell, you'll transcribe it into your spellbook in the process using your own notation. For each level of the spell, the process costs an additional 30 gp worth of fine inks, which you must have in your possession. You can begin learning a spell of a higher level than your maximum spell level (though you cannot cast it until your maximum spell level matches or exceeds the level of the spell).

Ritual Casting

When you reach 2nd level, you can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don't need to have the spell memorized. When you cast a spell as a ritual, the casting of the spell takes 10 minutes longer than normal, and can't be cast at a higher level, but also doesn't expend any mana.

Wizard Archetype

When you reach 3rd level, you choose your wizard archetype shaping your practice of magic.
