Tools

A tool helps you to do something you couldn't otherwise do, such as craft or repair an item, forge a document, or pick a lock. Your species, class background, or talents give you proficiency with certain tools. Proficiency with a tool allows you to add your proficiency bonus to any ability check you make using that tool. Tool use is not tied to a single ability, since proficiency with a tool represents broader knowledge of its use. For example, the GM might ask you to make a Dexterity check to carve a fine detail with your woodcarver's tools, or a Strength check to make something out of particularly hard wood.
If you meet certain a certain Passive Rating threshold with a tool, you can also bolster the application of a skill in very specific circumstances. In such cases, the check is made with advantage. Each tool's description lists their Skill Benefits and describes the circumstances under which the benefit applies. In order to receive these additional benefits, you must have at least 1 Proficiency Rank in that Tool, though you don't need to have the tools at hand. For example, a Passive Rating of 16 with a Pawns Set gives you advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks, but only against creature's you've played the game against.
