Common
Common is the trade language of Eltar. Almost every sentient, civilized being speaks a smattering of it, and most are fluent. While most cannot read or write the language, generally, the people of Eltar are able to converse with each other in this language.
Phonology
The phonetics and phonology of the Common language differ from one dialect to another, usually without interfering with mutual communication. Phonological variation affects the inventory of phonemes (i.e. speech sounds that distinguish meaning), and phonetic variation consists of differences in pronunciation of the phonemes.
Phonetics
Phonetics of the common tongue vary based on their regional dialects. These dialects are described below using their closest analogue within the English language:
- Alturian Dialect: Similar to British English, with regional differences across the Kingdom of Arandal.
- Qoynish Dialect: Similar to American English, with several regional differences consistent with the differences between the dialects of the twenty seven tribes that were assimilated into the Eternal Empire of Qoyne. For example, people south of Xuuyai may speak with a southern drawl, while the northern coast speaks Boston accent. This is most commonly spoken by individuals from The Empire of Qoyne, and to a lesser degree, those from the Eastern Underdark.
- Naivian Dialect: Similar to the Indian English dialect with accents that broadly match those of the South Asian Subcontinent.
- Iddelean Dialect:
- Dwarven Dialect:
- Elven Dialect:
- Gnomish Dialect:
