Wedge Guards

While Wedge Guard is not a unified term used through the Borean nations for those who serve as guards atop Hession's Wedge, it is the colloquial term used to describe the individuals who fulfil that role. Wedge Guard may be considered a military rank by some, but the role in and of itself has some key differences compared to the role of typical soldiers or other military personnel. In fact, in Brist and Phesunlay, Wedge Guards are often considered wholly distinct from the military and operate within their own command structure and system.   A Wedge Guard must come from one of the four primary Borean nations: Varenval, Brist, Phesunlay, or Konard. These individuals work in 5 deoch on, 5 deoch off patterns, meaning that their schedule slowly shifts over many eochs. Wedge Guards are the physical and symbolic representation of humanity within Hession's Peace, signed at the end of the Great Borean War. In accordance with Hession's Peace, three of the primary Borean nations (except Konard) must have five Wedge Guards at the star fort at all times. Konard also occasionally send Wedge Guards to the fort, but the number varies and their involvement is not explicitly called out in Hession's Peace.   The Wedge itself is a six-pointed star fort, with two points stretching out into each nation. The centre nexus of the borders is at the centre of the fort, and the fort is jointly patrolled and maintained by all three nations. Four of the five guards for each nation patrol the points that do not face into their own nation, and the remaining guard patrols both points within their own nation. This means each point has two individuals in it at all times, with a third person in each point regularly throughout each day.   The role of Wedge Guard is unique in that while there is a very low chance that they will experience any combat, Hession's Wedge is the only place of constant intermingling between military members of the three largest Borean nations. Therefore, those selected for these roles are not always the most martially skillful, but they are particularly diplomatic (bordering on being spies). However, given this persistent intermingling and espionage, Wedge Guards are also often segregated from main society during their time away from the fort, to prevent them from being able to divulge significant secrets. This often results in Wedge Guards being forgotten by the general public, and thus it is particularly difficult for most nations to maintain Wedge Guard populations since the role is very prestigious, but ultimately ruinous.
