Meslin's First Journal

Meslin's First Journal is the root document which became the basis for not only the Meslin Map Company, but also nearly ever book that the company has produced since its founding. Meslin's First Journal was written by hand by Meslin Asfoda during his initial travels around Elotia, during his first ten eochs as a guide in the employee of the Emerald Crown and its agents.   Meslin's First Journal was taken apart by Meslin due to its deteriorating condition sometime after the founding of the MMC, but the journal was put back together and preserved by Meslin's assistant and children as a surprise gift upon his retirement from the company. The journal currently occupies the primary display case at the MMC's headquarters in Brist, and replicas of the journal are available for sale.

Purpose

Meslin's First Journal was an attempt, by Meslin, to record the lands of Elotia as he saw them and experienced them as a guide. Meslin had always been drawn to the histories and geographies of the places he visited, and so he began to sketch and record his travels in an effort to recall all of the places that he had seen. In some small way, Meslin considered that this journal might eventually be enough proof to demonstrate that he could become an Emiger, though that was a lofty and far off goal when the first journal began.

Document Structure

Clauses

Meslin's First Journal was roughly divided by deoch, with Meslin setting aside a solid passing every going or two to document where he had travelled over that duration of time. For the start of each deoch, Meslin would remove a small piece of the corner of the deoch marking page, cycling between the upper and lower exposed corners. Each deoch section often contained five to six pages of hand written notes, as well as four to five sketches of landscapes or items that Meslin chose to document.

Publication Status

Meslin's First Journal became publicly accessible only after the MMC was well established and successful. As appreciation for Meslin's work grew across Elotia, demand for copies of the First Journal increased and the MMC decided to publish a replica copy of the journal. Prior to the publication of these replicas, the First Journal could only be viewed at the MMC Headquarters after Meslin himself had died and only with special permission of one of Meslin's children and the Chief Publisher of the MMC.
