Ministry Transmogrifer
The transmogrifiers are the lead researchers, performing the duties of validating archivist experiments as well as conducting their own into transformation and extraplanar arcane energies. At this rank, there is as many intelligent undead as there are those who are half-mortal and half-extraplanar from extensive arcane research. Some of this research is in the transformation of metals, minerals, elements ... or people through spellcasting or alchemical means.
It's not uncommon to find a Ministry member of this rank in the company of an abyssal or other extra-planar creature. However, the creature is always a captive for study, as the Ministry has a strict "no pact" policy with extra-planar creatures. This is over a concern that while the transmogrifer has the best interest of the Ministry at heart, the extra-planar creature will not. The hopes are that through intensive study of extra-planar creatures and planes, the Ministry will be better able to prevent malevolent incursions of these beings to the world. In addition, they hope to learn more about how to control and reshape the planes.
However, per Ministry rules, only the transmogrifer rank is cleared to interact with extra-planar creatures. This is because transmogrifers receive special training to defend against the methods extra-planar beings will use to ensnare a member of the Ministry.
Another responsibility of a transmogrifer is to review and advising the First Alchemist on mandates and rules for the Ministry. They do this through the Council of Nine, where once a year, nine transmogrifer are randomly selected to act as advisors for the First Alchemist.
