Ellmar Imra's Diary entry
Found lying on Ellmar Imra's desk in his office, this entry from what appears to be a personal loose-leaf diary has survived the fire.
Ecaeris is the real expert on this but I promised her I would look more closely at some of the surviving texts in the library to see if they shed any light on the origins of these Oharith tablets with which she is obsessed. That they exist we are now reasonably certain, where they are remains a mystery save for the one in Ecaeris’ possession that she’s had for years and been struggling to decode. She remains tightlipped about where it was found and by whom but I am beginning to have my suspicions.
I think she’s right about why they are inscribed in some ancient Ancient Dwarvish rune set, the Dwarves had something to do with the tablet creation and their encryption and at some point we will have to talk to them.
Both she and Deah Ssip have been talking also about this ancient language, well at least Riele has been to and fro with messages between them so much the poor thing must be exhausted. They are increasingly convinced this language existed and recently Ssip has made some progress with translating what may be fragments of that language discovered in some previously uncatalogued volumes. So far I believe only a few words.
The great question remains. What lies in the vault?
It is one of the mysteries of Sunom that perplexes me. In all my years I have never once yearned to see it opened (though I have been encouraged by some), it’s almost a sacred edict that it remain sealed and yet in recent months I’ve felt drawn to it in some way. The records of previous Illmar’s show a consistent reluctance bordering on a fear of opening the vault, and of course the small matter that no-one knows how to open it. Ecaeris mentioned the vault in her last message to me about six months ago arguing we should begin research into opening it and I politely reminded her that the last recorded attempt met with a quite literally shocking death. I can recall the passage from Ellmar Keltan’s diary almost word for word ‘they were fried where they stood, all of them, every man without exception, their bones cracking and their flesh bursting as a massive electrical assault assailed their bodies’
I have set to one side the suggestion by some that the vault contains an active compound that caused the The Cleanse , opening it would therefore spell certain death for us all.
The recent surge in Orc attacks is worrying. They are uncharacteristically co-ordinated for such a generally unreliable species. The Council has suggested some other force is at work and that the Orcs are somehow responsible for the increased seismic activity. Perhaps this is over dramatic and the Orcs are simply emboldened by our crumbling walls and the general eastwards march of The Waste . There is no doubt they yearn to see the downfall of Sunom which will surely come before this millenia is out
But I am minded to recall that intriguing interview with a young woman some 20 years ago that I had put out of my mind but now seems more relevant. I wonder where she can be now. I have retrieved that document from the archives and placed it in my personal floor safe for safety.
