Inn of the Wyvern

This Inn was built by Martin Woodshaver in 1043, shortly after marrying his wife, Nora Dianze.   She was a great cook and many of the locals enjoyed her food so much that she felt the only way to make everyone happy was to open her own kitchen. Martin loved the idea so much that he added rooms to the kitchen so that travelers would be able to stay longer and spend more money on her food. As more travelers stayed, Martin wanted to make them spend more coin. To this he thought of ways to get the travelers spend more of their coin in his establishment.   It has been 15 years since Nora laid Martin to rest behind the Inn and 3 years since the grandchildren of Martin and Nora chose to keep the Inn open when their grandmother passed away.   Today, Crelp Woodshaver, Martin and Nora's youngest grandchild, runs the Inn. He has much help from his Cousin Anna in the kitchen. She learned everything from her Grandmother and even studied the fine art of cooking from neighboring cities. Once a year Anna travels for a week to a month gathering new recipes, ingredients and skills from anyone that is willing to teach her. During this time, Caemila May, the bartender will take over the kitchen duties.   It is said that from time to time Martin and Nora can be seen looking down the hill, from under a great willow tree, at how successful their Inn has become.

Purpose / Function

Originally the Inn was built just to serve locals some good food. In a short time, it became a destination for weary travelers and adventurers to rest, relax, fill their stomachs and resupply their packs.

Design

The construction of the absolutely spotless Inn's cobblestone fixtures and the decor is tasteful, and there's clearly been some decent money put into its construction; the cobblestone fixtures are rock solid, and quite beautiful. The walls of the tavern have been freshly painted a nice royal purple color. A large nicely crafted painting of a dragon is hung proudly in a finely crafted frame near the bar.

Sensory & Appearance

The smells emanating from the kitchen tantalise your nostrils, and when you ask the waiting staff what's on menu, they begin to take a deep breath, before listing out a huge array of wines, ales, lagers, and spirits.   Early mornings are brought with the smells of baked goods coming from the kitchen.

Denizens

Martin's first enterprise was to befriend the local tailor. Shanairla Caerdonel had a stall in the local farmers market. She is an elderly female elf of average size, has hazel eyes with translucent skin. She is pretty much able to make or mend anything. Martin bought out her stall in the farmers market and hired her, along with her son Korfel. Korfel is a withered elf, rather tall and lithe, and has pale blue eyes with tan skin. The most notable physical trait of Korfel is that he has long, gangly arms. Korfel cannot resist flirting. He is always assuming the best of people, imprudent, and subjective. Korfel tends to the laundry service and in his free time he is a trapper, as you never know when you will need a certain leather or fur to repair a piece for someone.   Behind the counter is who you would assume to be the bartender, a tall female half-elf who is currently playing a card game by herself. You walk up to the bar, and strike up conversation with the woman, who introduces herself as Caemila May.

Entertainment

Monthly

Each month a group of traveling Bards will stop by the Inn for a week or so to give the guests a bit more than they paid for.
  • Last month the Mistle Tones, a small Elven troup, filled the halls with some festive singing.
  • Two nights ago, a group of Drow elves, called The Fey Fighters stopped in for a 3 night performance.
  • Next month, the famous Dragonborn band called Van Scalen, should be in town as well.

"One never knows the caliber of talent that might walk through the doors. Last year we saw The Blacksmith Five and Nine Foot Flails here." -local farmer
Weekly

At the end of every week, Crelp judges a hatchet throwing contest at the Inn.
  • 3 axes per competitor (Roll a 1d20 + Dex modifier)
Scoring
  • 1-10 misses
  • 11-13 Outer ring 1 point
  • 14-16 Middle ring 2 points
  • 17-19 Inner ring 3 points
  • 20 Bullseye 5 points

Alterations

Within a few short months, the small building started to expand with a few rooms for travelers. The following year, more rooms were added. Local politicians came to Martin asking if he could provide a large gathering and meeting space for them, so he built a meeting hall.     Later on, his daughter asked for space to give weary travelers much needed stress relief.

Architecture

The Inn was built during a time of peace with all the races of Elios. There is stone work from local Dwarven cities, wood work from neighboring Elves and the gardens planted and taken care of by Halflings from a close Hamlet.   Up until the point where war began to break out all over Elios between the Humans, Elves and Dwarves; Dwarves from many kingdoms had sent building materials to make improvements to the Inn.
  • Queen Borka Flatmountain of the Desert Clan Gudsfurje sent her best craftsmen with huge loads of granite and sandstone.
  • Queen Yngva Amberthane of the Mountain Clan Tiomarl sent slabs of red marble that was used in the kitchen, bar and enough left over for table tops.
  • Queen Ingrun Giantkindler of the Sea Clan Brekngrun sent a book made from seaweed so that Nora could have a place to write all her recipes along with a quill made from coral and exotic ink from the darkness of the deepest sea.
  • High Chief Beini Largespirit of the Hill Clan Horsporilug sent furs and fabrics. More than enough to furnish all the rooms.
The Elven King, Orcanthalas from Indewil, sent some oak slabs that their artisans carved into entry doors and made oak panels for some of the rooms that later became the rooms that are used for massage therapy.   King Epsodine from the local human kingdom sent a life sized portrait of himself....that has never been on any wall to date.

Tourism

Nearly all travelers that pass through Easthaven stop by the Inn for something. The prices are reasonable, the food is delicious and that company is that of a close family.
"I just made it back from my month on the road. I made it to this wonderful place called Javesz and one of the bakers had me try a Javeszian Sticky Lemon Bar. Oh My Goodness!!! I was on my fourth bar before I knew What was going on. These bars are like citrusy heaven. He let me copy the recipe and now they are on my Special Dessert list."  Anna

The length of the sidebar makes article a bit unbalanced, Perhaps dividing it up into 3 sections,a column for food and one for drink in the main body, with Other Amenities in the side bar would balance it out (rooms included in other amenities). I would also potentially expect a narrower price range for things offered at the tavern, as if you are using a currency rate similar to D&D the prices range from 5 copper to the equivalent of 3,000 copper.   Does Anna know how long she will be gone for each year? Does the Inn close when she leaves, not having a cook, or are there other staff so it can get by until her return?   Are Martin and Nora still alive, but retired, or have the passed on?   Questions and formatting things aside though, you did a good job.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. Believe me, the unbalanced nature of this article is killing me, but I am a NOOB at this and have no idea how to format. It took me over a year just to figure out how to enter one of these contests.... Hopefully by the time the contest is over, I will be able to address the questions that you brought up, they are pretty relevant.

No worries, The discord has been very good to me in learning how to format things. Always glad to see someone new in the challenges.

A dwarven massage sounds like a risk I would be willing to take! What a wonderful establishment! I really enjoy the short story and the length of the article. I would however look for a way to balance the main article with the sidebar somehow. Maybe by adding art, twiddling with the font sizes or adding more information?

Thank you for the comment. I am trying to figure out the balance of it all...

Interesting how the place provides massages on top of a significant menu. That's definitely not something you see every day. It does feel a bit weird that only part of the menu is within the sidebar-box. Maybe use hr-tags to separate the different options rather than have them split like that?   Something else: You cover all the sons, and as a result the intro is quite large. But if the daughter took over and now the grandchildren are running the place, the sons don't seem to really matter. Perhaps you could move those details into another article, and only use a brief summary here to indicate why the youngest daughter took over rather than her brothers?   I do like how you expressed the various problems that different-personality children face.

Thank you very much for your comments. I am not realy sure how the sidebars work, I was just happy to have a place to put them other than tha main article.   I guess I could limit the background for the children, but new articles are not an option. I have maxed out the number of articles allowed to free members. I guess I was just trying to make the main article not be so much shorter than the sidebars, thats why the types of massages are given details instead of just listing them.   Still working on it though, not ready to submit for the contest yet.

Hm... Maybe use spoiler-tags to park any info you consider less-important but can't park in other articles?   As for the sidebar, as far as I can tell, this is how it works (but I might be slightly wrong.)

  • First, you have the above-block stuff.
  • Next, the in-block top section.
  • Next, the Template prompts that you filled in.
  • Next, the in-block bottom-section.
  • Lastly, the below-block bottom section.

My biggest problem is that I am a visual designer. I have to see what it is going to look like as I am doing it and not punch in a few things here and there and "know" where and how it will look when I go to view it. Seems like every time I try to fix something now, the wrong things change, i.e. font size, color, location.... Right now I am just trying to publish a decent article for the event in hopes that it may inspire someone or even to have others help teach me how not to be so dull with my writing.   Thank you again for your suggestions and comments, they mean a lot.

So I really do not know how to make it any more appealing. I think that I have done all that I can at this point. Maybe by the next one I will be able to do better. Hope everyone enjoys it...

I like the extra amenities and your band names. Those are fun touches. I'll take a pomegranate pie, please :) Sounds delicious.

I don't think I've ever heard of a tavern/inn with a tailoring service. Given how roughed up adventurers would get, that has so much money making potential that I might have to use that if I ever DM a DnD night.   Great Article!   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Feel free to check out my Tavern Challenge article if you want to see what I am up to! Thank you very much for your comment. Unfortunately for me, my world may never see players again. The group I had quit right before Covid and now I am moving to the Philippines. Hopefully I can find players there...
