Electromancy

Electromancy is the name given to manipulation of electricity through magic to create electrical arcs and powerful electrical discharges. It was first discovered in 945 by Cordaintine mage Sofia Caruso. Sofia was well-known at the time for her logical approach to magic, something common now, but very rare at the time. This approach went on to inspire Eriaen Montergo, author of The Nature of Magic, to begin to explain magic scientifically. Indeed, she laid the foundation for modern magical understanding.

Mechanics

Electromancy is performed through the manipulation of charges. Using Charge Manipulation, the user should focus a strong negative charge over time into an object that they are holding (this object should be insulated from the user themself, or they risk electrocution). At the same time, to select a target, they should produce a strong positive charge in the target. When the two charges equalise, an electrical arc will form. This arc can, in some cases, be powerful enough to destroy buildings, and is almost always lethal.

Utility

Electromancy does not have many applications due to its specific nature, but it can occasionally be used in combat applications. A good example of this is Sir Arthur Hurst, a combat mage specialising in electricity currently fighting for the Kingdom of Erdantia, but of Avenic descent. It is also occasionally used In executions due to the horrifying appearance of electricity-based injuries, and the intimidation it could cause as a result. In fact, this was one of the first uses of Electromancy after its discovery. The Cordaint Empire would typically reserve such a brutal punishment for high-ranking members of rebellions around the empire, of which there were many. This did little, however, to curb insurgency. More recently, it has taken a role in chemistry, with its ability to cause electrolysis and heat metals through resistance. In fact, the concept of resistance would not be understood were it for electromancy.
Never have I seen a power so useless and impractical, yet so beautiful and awe-inspiring,

Access & Availability
Electromancy is not typically taught by magic schools due to its lack of applications and ethically questionable nature, as well as its high complexity and risk. However, there are a few schools that will teach it, such as the Kyras Academy. However, this is not taught unless it is specifically requested.

The Charge Lantern

Charge Lanterns are object specifically designed for the build-up of negative charge by a mage. They are typically made from silver (due to its high electrical and magical conductivity). They typically resemble a lantern, hence the name, with a wooden handle for insulation. The Charge Lantern was invented in 1389 by a Shadraki Artificer, but the technology slowly spread and is now a common form of storing the large negative charges needed to produce electrical arcs.
