First Stiff

First Stiff is the tradition of having a distilled alcoholic drink for the first time on the new moon after one's sixteenth birthday in Ashmyka. People under the age of sixteen are considered minors in Ashmyka, and are not permitted to drink distilled alcohol. Brewed alcohol, on the other hand, is permitted after the age of six. The name of First Stiff comes from a common euphemism for distilled alcohols.

Execution

First Stiffs are quite loose in structure, but typically include a series of one to six short speeches before the celebrant takes their first sip. After the celebrant's first sip, a toast is called and everyone drinks. Participants in First Stiffs are expected to drink heavily to their heart's content. Drunkenness is not uncommon, although some may refrain from excessive consumption.

Components and tools

The first and foremost component of a proper First Stiff is a drink made of distilled alcohol. Other components may change, but beverages made with distilled alcohol are required for the observance of the First Stiff. Which alcohol is used varies based on region and personal tastes, but brandies and whiskies are common.

The alcohol may be mixed with fruit, herbs, or sugar before being served, and may or may not be chilled. Drinkware is typically made of glass or hammered copper, and can be of any size, although smaller cups are more common for use in First Stiff rituals.

Participants

First Stiffs are semi-formal affairs that generally only include the family and close friends of the celebrant. In certain localities, not even the closest of friends are invited, as First Stiffs are deemed a family affair. In either case, only trusted individuals are permitted at a First Stiff. All participants are expected to be of majority. Those who cannot drink distilled alcohol for any reason cannot attend a First Stiff.

Observance

First Stiffs are always observed on a new moon, regardless of what moon phase the sixteenth birthday falls on. Observing First Stiff on any other moon phase is considered taboo, as the moon itself is considered a guest and cannot drink with the new adult, and so it is seen as rude to "invite" the moon.
