Dis

Dis is the second layer of the Nine Layers of Hell. It is almost entirely covered by the city of the same name that stands in a valley surrounded by a ring of spiked mountains. As far as most visitors and inhabitants are concerned, the layer and the city are indistinguishable.

Geography

Despite being potentially infinite, the city of Dis always feels crowded and oppressive to anyone inside. The entire city is made of red-hot iron. Every wall and cobblestone burn to the touch. The material exudes a column of smoke that constantly shrouds the layer in a dark haze.

Geographical Features

Someone who manages to leave the city could walk away from it, leaving it behind as its valley lays hidden by a ring of mountains. However, very few accounts of the city's exterior are known.   On the other hand, approaching Dis feels like a break from reality. A traveler can only arrive at the city by following a road paved with skulls. As the walls approach, one is, without noticing a transition, suddenly inside the city, with no edge or outer wall in sight.

Trade

The city host numerous markets and bazaars whose wares attract creatures from various planes.

Notable Locations

  • The Iron Tower, personal fortress of Dispater, Lord of the Second. It is visible from the entire layer due to its enormous height, as it rises above the haze.
  • The Garden of Delights, a facility that offers the illusion of sumptuous meals and pleasures of the flesh for exorbitant fees.
  • Mentiri, the great prison of Dis, which holds those that broke the rules of the Hells. It "reforms" its prisoners by constantly tempting them into becoming evil.

Inhabitants

The streets of Dis are always crowded with parading devil nobles and workers that constantly remodel the city at Dispater's behest. The most numerous inhabitants are abishai, imps, lemures, nupperibos, and spinagons, but also shades and other planar creatures can be found.   The city's underground dungeons are filled with petitioners, prisoners of the Blood War, and kidnapped mortals from Eldarr. Their tortured screams can be heard on the surface through vents in the city walls.
