Troutberk

"Troutberk, eh? Now that's a name that brings back memories. It's where the sea sings its lullaby to the folk—and where every sunrise smells like salt, fish, and stories waiting to be told."

Description

Nestled against the sea on Cetandar's southern border, Troutberk is a quaint fishing village perched precariously where the land meets the ocean. The air constantly spells of salt and—at most times of the day—the smell of fish mixes alongside it. The houses here are built almost solely from weathered stone and driftwood, and are tightly clustered along narrow, cobbled streets that wind down to the harbor. The village is surrounded by rolling hills covered in tough grasses and small patches of hardy trees, resilient to the salty air. The shore here is calm at most times, and there are no large rocks or coral formations that would threaten ships. The village's centerpiece is the harbor, being a modest but trustworthy collection of modest piers and fishing boats painted in faded, vibrant hues. These ships have served the people for many years, and are truly the lifeblood of the village.   The population is small, only around 60 people, most of whom are tied to the sea in one way or another. Troutberk feels remote, with the nearest large town almost three days by foot away, but it is not isolated. Traders and travelers occasionally stop by, particularly those looking for a haven on their travels, or to try the prized smoked trout sold here. Visitors immediately notice the intricate carvings on doorways and piers—depictions of marine creatures, Heschius Ban, and curling waves.

Origin

Troutberk was founded some 60 years ago by a group of fisherfolk seeking refuge from the chaos of inland conflicts. Drawn by the rich bounty of the coastal waters and the peaceful, calm existence away from large towns and cities, the settlers thrived here on the sea's gifts. Over time, the village became known for its fishers, and especially for the large bounty of trout caught in the cold coastal streams that flow into the ocean. The Ryushin influence arrived later, brought by wandering oceanic traders who left their mark on the village through craftsmanship and sea lore. Troutberk has remained as a safe haven for fishermen and a hub for those seeking to trade in oceanic delicacies.

Routine

Life in Troutberk begins with the dawn. The village stirs to the sound of seagulls and the distant crash of waves. Fishers prepare their boats, checking nets and sails before heading out to sea. While the fishers are at work, others in the village tend to tasks like mending nets, smoking fish, or trading goods. Children often play near the shoreline, weaving tales of sea monsters and daring explorers. By midday, the smell of freshly cooked fish wafts through the streets as families take their meals.   Afternoons are quieter, with many villagers engaged in repairing their homes or crafting goods to sell. Nearing sunset, the harbors come alive once again as the ships return home. The day’s catch is celebrated with laughter, storytelling, and the rhythmic sound of knives filleting fish. Evenings often see villagers gather around communal fires, sharing songs and legends under the starry sky, their voices mingling with the ceaseless whisper of the waves. Despite its modest size, Troutberk thrives with a steady rhythm tied to the sea, the seasons, and the enduring spirit of its people.
