House Nakarai

House Nakarai is one of the oldest noble lines in Lungao, founded in the early years of the Dragon Dynasty by Nakarai Senzu, a famed scholar and the first appointed Minister of Law under Emperor Ryujin. Tasked with drafting the initial civil codes of Lungao, Senzu established a bureaucratic tradition so precise and revered that many consider it sacred. Ever since, House Nakarai has stood not as warriors or merchants, but as the unwavering stewards of imperial order, guiding Lungao with quill and decree rather than sword or flame.   The culture of House Nakarai is shaped by duty, restraint, and the endless pursuit of knowledge. Their cities are quiet sanctuaries of law, where even commoners are taught to read and record their dealings. Children of the house are taught to speak clearly, write beautifully, and never forget a name, a face, or a promise. Outsiders often view them as cold, but those who dwell within Uzenka know their devotion to justice is warm in its own way—protective, patient, and precise.   Though their cities are not known for their martial power, House Nakarai wields a different sort of strength: control over law, taxation, and imperial edicts. Their scribes are found in every court and province, and their Jade Mandarins are both administrators and arbiters of justice, able to elevate or ruin a noble house’s ambitions with the stroke of a brush. With one foot in scholarship and another in governance, they ensure Lungao never forgets its past nor strays too far from its foundational pacts.   Their seat, Uzenka, rises from the river cliffs like a fortress of paper and jade. Its libraries stretch underground and upward, built into the mountain face and shielded from both war and weather. The Scroll Vaults hold centuries of knowledge, including sealed treaties, forbidden scriptures, and the personal diary of Ryujin himself—read only once a generation by the Lord Minister during the Ritual of Reflection. In times of crisis, this house often becomes the spine of the empire, drafting edicts, negotiating law with other nobles, and stabilizing the realm.
