The Stratums of Society

Achitar as many other countries has a variety of social classes. These determine both written and unwritten privileges these individuals have. While it is possible to move between the various social classes to a degree, only a handful ever manage to do so.
High Nobility
From the king and queen to the barons of Achitar. These nobles wield absolute authority within their respective lands and outside of it they remain regarded highly. As long as a high noble stays within the letter of the law and the wishes of the ruler, they are free to do as they see fit with their land. While they could make new laws, only few do so as they are more often too occupied with managing their holdings. The king is the major exception as he is the head of the kingdom, the rightful ruler and any word he says is law.
The only way known to become a member of the high nobility is to either marry someone with a title or for the king himself to grant a title of high nobility to someone he considers worthy of managing a hold of Achitar's land.
Low Nobility
These are the baronets, knights and gentlemen. They lack the same power as the high nobility but in return these titles are far easier to get. A baronet and knight still needs to be given by the king, but a gentleman is in pure essence somebody rich enough to afford the title. Still, a member of low nobility is far more likely to be trusted and their word have more weight in court than a commoner would. If it is purely one's word against another's then noble will always come on top.
Commoner
Merchants, wealthy people lacking titles of nobility, farmers working a piece of land and generally anyone wealthy enough to manage in a bad season. Most commoners believe they are above the poor. In spite of their status as free citizen, they are still rarely allowed to walk freely in places such as the Crown District outside the publicly available places.
The Poor
Indentured servants, most people living in the dregs, actual serfs who work for a liege and generally anyone who wouldn't be able to live if a seasonal harvest went wrong. They are looked down upon by the rest of society and some even considers them a pest, but sometimes a necessity for their willingness to work even the most grueling work to earn food for the day.
