Languages

Language Mechanics

There are important changes to how PCs gain languages. Please read below:
  • Players no longer receive free bonus languages equal to their int scores. Int-boosting items will likewise not give any languages either.
  • Learn only 1 new language per 2 ranks of Linguistics you have. Races/classes with an option to learn 2 languages with every 1 rank of Linguistics will be altered so that they only learn 1 languages per 1 rank of Linguistics.
  • PCs must use 40 DT days to learn a single new language. Unlike other DT, a trainer will be explicitly required. They may do this a number of times equal to their base intelligence modifier.
  • Classes that give access to extra starting language choices (such as Wizard and Cleric) now instead directly grant one such language they offer as a bonus language.
  • Languages gained from base race remain unaltered.
  • The "Common" language now has a name: Syrvel
  • Players gain one free regional language, appropriate to the region they grew up in. If that region is Achitar or Syrvelot, you do not get a free regional language unless you either come from a family of immigrants whose first language is a different regional language (in which case, you gain that regional language) or lack the Common language for some reason (in which case, you receive Syrvel as your regional language).

Regional Languages

In addition to the normal languages a PC can take, there are a variety of languages spoken throughout the world. Unlike normal Pathfinder languages, these tongues are not tied to a specific race, but rather a specific region. The list of languages classified as regional languages is as follows:
  • Digosan, the language of the Esconti territory of Digoso
  • Estrellan, the language of the Esconti territory of Estrella
  • Hild, the language of the Esconti territory of Hildeschein
  • Lumin, the language of the Esconti territory of Luminex
  • Syrvel,1 the language of the Esconti territory of Syrvelot
  • Hoshigo, the language of the Joudan kingdom of Hoshikuni
  • Xingyu, the language of the Joudan kingdom of Xingguo
  • Byeol-eo, the language of the Joudan kingdom of Byeol-Nala
  • Alqawan, the language of Alqawa.
  • Kirishi,2 the language of the Elandar native culture of Kirishi
1: As races normally receive Common as a language, they normally receive Syrvel (which is the name for the "Common" language). If, for any reason, a character doesn't start with Common, Syrvel is considered a regional language for the purpose of taking it.
2: Catfolk from the Kirishi culture do not get the racial catfolk language, but instead gets the kirishi language. Further, gaining this language requires mod approval after presenting a proper reason for how it was acquired. An example of this could be having been on one of the trade caravans to one of the discovered tribes.
