King Joel Grandis Virreau III

Overseeing his country from Castle Virreau, Joel Grandis Virreau III has served as king of the Kingdom of Achitar for nearly fifty-one years.   Even-tempered and insightful, Virreau III rules with a steady hand and reserved tongue, maintaining Achitar's steady growth throughout his reign. Preferring to avoid conflict and unrest when possible, he has avoided issuing controversial edicts and taking drastic action. Instead, he generally assigns tasks and projects to established families and promising new nobility, which has earned him much popularity among all levels of the peerage. Virreau III's strong talent for oration and debate helps him upkeep his reputation as a fair and lucid monarch, able to rally both nobles and common folk alike with his unique blend of realism and idealism.   Like all of his predecessors, from his ancestor Masuvius I to his father Virreau II, Virreau III is endowed with sorcerous magic of incredible potency. His mastery of fate magic permits him a measure of control over destiny itself, which his predecessors have thoroughly established as "the magic of kings." In particular, his powerful oath and geas magic allows him to make bold decisions usually gated by a lack of absolute trust between parties.   Having held the title longer than either of his predecessors, Virreau III currently stands at the center of a succession controversy. Ever since the days of the Masuvius family, the royal family has always chosen their spouses and heirs to the throne based on the purity of their bloodlines and strength of their magic. However, Virreau I had much weaker magic than his brother Masuvius VI, and while Virreau I and Virreau II married powerful sorceresses to reverse the degradation of the bloodline, Virreau III could not find such a woman until his later years, when he married Lisette Gaudin.   To date, none of Virreau III's children have shown as great a potential for magic as he did in his youth, and with Virreau III too old to remarry and have more children after Lisette's demise, many believe the elderly king fears the royal bloodline is in danger of weakening. Regardless of if these rumors hold merit or not, Virreau III has delayed announcing the successor to the Achitarian throne in hopes of a true heir arising, placing heavy pressure on the noble courts to wait and his descendants to prove their worth.
