Ancestor's Hair Toxicity
Causes
Ancestor's Hair toxixity or AHT is caused by the use of improperly made tea from the Ancestor's Hair plant. This tea is used by some mountain villages to induce visions that are purported to be knowledge from the users ancestors or past lives.
Symptoms
Someone who has ingested this tea is suspected to have AHT if they experience some of the following:
- hallucinations lasting longer than 48 hours
- sudden incontinence
- violent outbursts
- seizures
- catatonia
- difficulty swallowing Afflicted essentially becomes trapped in their own head, majority of recovered individuals report getting lost in wherever they hallucinated.
Treatment
The best treatment for the afflicted is to tend to their needs as they will lose the ability to reasonably care for themselves within the week after ingesting the tea.Proper diet, hydratation and movement are the most important to raise chances of recovery. In most cases the person becomes passive, inacting no will of their own but still able to follow simple commands and muscle memory. Some people will regain their lucidity and lose most symptoms in 2-6 weeks. The longer the person is in this state the more likely that the state is permanent.
Prognosis
Even if mostly recovered, the person afflicted can still experience seizures, lapses in lucidity, and mood swings. If the person remains in the passive state even with care they will often suffer malnutrition, muscle atrophy, more frequent seizures and in cases lasting longer than a year the chance of death due to the complications of AHT rises by approximately 5% each year.
Prevention
The best preventive is not drinking tea made from Ancestor's Hair. If one must drink the tea for personal, religious or cultural practices, it is important to make or source the tea using the precise preparations of the plant, plant to water ratio, heating and steeping times in order to not create toxicity.
