Steenpadden Settlement in Ekozia | World Anvil

Steenpadden

Steenpadden is a town north of Selversheyn at the southern edge of the Ukanten Mountains, famous for its many different statues from all over the world lining the streets. Due to its location on the entrance to the Silverlined Clifflabyrinth, it is used as a base of operations for expeditions into the Ukanten Ruined City.

City of Silver

Steenpadden originally was founded due to its rich silver deposits in the nearby mountains. The religious cults and churches in Selversheyn required large shipments of silver for their many idolatries. Many fine-metal smitheries and mechanics are well established in the town and the local mechanics guild prides to be one of the oldest in the western part of Caramiza. Many mechanisms fashioned here use silver alloys instead of the more common iron-and copper alloys in their parts.

Statues of the miners

The town has always had the odd tradition of collecting many different statues. Some are crafted in this town by local artists, but many were either found in the region or imported by merchants and travellers. With the discovery of the nearby ruins, the number of statues has even increase and they are casually lining most roads of the town.   After a terrible accident in the cliffs, where the same landslide that uncovered the ruins killed as many as thirty miners, the town dedicated a statue for every one of them. They are lining the road towards the miner's guild and are shown in heroic poses, lifting their tools of trade into the air.

Expeditions and tourism

Any expedition into the mysterious ruins has to pass through Steenpadden and the town is flourishing by the new influx of people. Not only scientists are visiting, but curious, rich people come as well. Discovering ruins has become a trend among the nobles and they are paying well for adequate lodging and good tour guides. Due to several unexplored areas and the dangers within both the maze and the ruins, people are only allowed to enter with a certified guide and can only explore well known areas. Those unwilling to travel too far by foot can instead admire the artifacts displayed near the entrance to the maze.

A motivated watchmaker

One of the most famous and able watch makers, Theolis Huggendeen is residing in the city and using the extensive knowledge of silver alloys for his own projects. He is trying to create a device able to measure magical energy in its vicinity. To finance his efforts and convincing the mayor to let him stay in the council's chambers, he constructed a large clock which accurateky tells the time, prominently displayed on the cliff entrance of the Silverlined Clifflabyrinth.
